Though Simple Minds' wistful hit "See the Light" only peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991 and isn't listed in the database presumably due to weaker performance on other music charts, I think it's a terrific song nonetheless! While cleaning out my e-mail last night, I've run across some pertinent info Jim and Ed reported to me a while back regarding "See the Lights" and I thought I'd pass it along here...

Jim's promo CD single on A&M 75021 7546-2 (run times are actual):

1) 7" Mix Edit - 3:55
2) 7" Mix (No Guitar Solo) - 3:55
3) 7" Mix Full Length - 4:26
4) LP Edit - 3:52
5) Extended Mix - 6:59

According to Ed, the commercial cassette single runs 4:23 and I believe it's identical to the CD/LP version.

I agree with Todd, this is one of those great tracks
that only made a shy impression on the chart and in my
opinion deserved better. I wonder which version was
played mostly for airplay?

Though I'm not familiar with this song at all, can the 7"
Mix Edit be recreated from the 7" Full Mix Length (which I
presume is the LP version)?

I have this promo CD Maxi Single, it's a great song. I'm actually shocked this made the Top 40. In the U.K., it was also a small Top 40 hit. In this song, Jim sounds like Bono.

The LP version is not featured on the promo CD. Except
for the LP edit, the rest of the tracks are remixed,
the most obvious way to tell is the LP version has a
stronger snare. You can't accurately recreate the 7"
Mix Edit from the 7" Full Length Mix since the
latter's beats kick in as a fade in whereas the 7" mix
has a "cold" beat start, if that explanation makes
sense, tried my best :)

Makes perfect sense to me. I'm not planning on adding the
song to my own music library, but if I were, I'd seek out
the 3:55 7" Mix Edit.

My guess, from spending many years in radio, is that
stations probably played Track 1, the 7" Mix Edit.

Being the shortest of the remixes and the lead track on
the disc, your guess makes perfect sense to me :)Thanks
John!

I wish our good friend, the late Jim Abbott, was still
with us. He would have been able to share with us which
cut his station played.

I also wish Jim was still here for those details. I have Jim's promo CD in front of me, and there is no indication that says "play cut 2" or something like that. IF his former station played the song at all, it would've been the 7" Mix Edit. Given the very low peak of #35 on the R&R pop chart, it really wasn't much of an airplay hit at all.

I also acquired a second promo CD for "See The Lights":

75021 7540 2
1. non-described version (listed & actual 4:22)

This is likely the LP version, but I don't have the full-length album to compare. I'd say this is the official "single version" and "hit version" given that the cassette single also contains the LP version. Perhaps the hope was that by providing new single remixes to top 40, the song would do better on the charts. As it stalled out at #35 in R&R, perhaps plans were scrapped to issue the 7" remix commercially.

I also share your feelings about Jim, a great guy whom I
was lucky to get to correspond with quite a lot back
when. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise
Aaron!!
