Someone brought this one to my attention and I thought I'd ask the class. The 45 shows a time of (2:59), but most of the database entries check in at (3:15). The person I spoke to thought that the ending of the 45 was edited. Can anyone here confirm?

Can always squeeze in a quickie for you, Paul. My commercial 45 does show a listed time of (2:59), but has an actual time of (3:09). It features a short, severe fade. I'd be happy to shoot out a 45 dub, to compare for edits, but, knowing the song very well, I believe it is simply a fade.

DJ copies of this 45 originally gave artist credit to "P.G.". Does anyone have a dj copy with credit actually given to Gene Pitney?

I don't have a DJ copy but I notice that there is reverb on the mono Musicor stock 45 which is not on the Rhino Anthology CD. I don't know if there was reverb on any Musicor stereo LP.

As usual Bill your ears are right on. I think there is enough of a mix difference in this case to say we have a 45 and LP version of "She's A Heartbreaker". None of the stereo cd appearances to date have the reverb you mention is found on the 45. The Musicor stereo vinyl LP "She's A Heartbreaker" does not have the reverb either. And I checked the dj 45 I have with the artist credited to P.G. and it also has the reverb just like the commercial 45 credited to Gene Pitney.

Pat, FYI, I heard a taped interview with Gene Pitney the week after he died last year on XM radio, and he'd commented that the "P.G." listed artist on this particular DJ 45 was, in fact, a Musicor marketing ploy designed to "disguise" the fact that Gene was the actual artist to radio station Music Directors. By 1968, Gene was no longer a reliable US hitmaker, and this "new, hipper sounding tune, She's A Heartbreaker" was Musicor's attempt to have the song be judged on its own merits, and not have Gene's "not as hip as he used to be" image come into play. Gene found this idea both silly and humourous, and correctly surmised that his voice was still IMMEDIATELY recognizable on the record. Musicor also had a very small artist roster, and that the "P.G." (Pitney Gene) moniker never fooled anyone, right from the first line of his vocal. It wouldn't surprise me if his real name did happen to appear on later DJ copies - if I do stumble upon one, I'll let you know, Pat.

OK, I'm confused. Is there any version on CD that doesn't sound like it was mastered from vinyl?

I have two versions I bought from iTunes--one that runs (3:15) and one that runs (3:09)--both licensed from Gusto Records. (The (3:09) sounds like it was mixed a
little differently, but both sound like needledrops especially at the beginning.)

Though inaccessible at the moment, my
promo 45 does credit Gene Pitney, and has
the stock B side (istr the P.G. promos
were double A side).
Live in stereo.

Sorry to bump, but anybody got a good digital source for this? Both of
my iTunes copies sound like they were bad needledrops.
