In the 10th edition, you show five CDs as having the 45 version of "Summertime" by D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Based on your accompanying comments for these discs, you imply that the 45 version run time is 3:54. I recently picked up a copy of the commercial cassette single, which states "LP Version" on the sleeve. I clocked the cassingle run time at 4:30 and it appears to be identical to the version on the Will Smith Greatest Hits CD (Columbia 87076), which you comment is the "LP version". Therefore, the commercial cassette single and LP version look to be one in the same and no distinction should be needed here. So I have to ask what is the origin of the 3:54 version you are claiming is the 45 version? Was it issued on a different commercial single format, or is it actually a DJ edit? Todd, the leadoff track on the commercial CD single is the "Single Edit," running 3:54.

Thanks, Aaron. So I guess all entries for "Summertime" in the 10th edition with the (LP version) comment could probably be changed to more specifically say: (LP and cassette single version). Meanwhile, the CDs showing the (45 version) comment may be more accurately described as: (CD single version).
By the way, I downloaded the "Summertime" track off of Napster from DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's Platinum & Gold Collection album (Jive/BMG Heritage 54213) and the fadeout is abruptly truncated at the 3:55 mark. Does anyone know if this occurs on actual CD copies as well? |

It's a pretty smooth fade out on the CD single. And actually, without A/B-ing the LP and Single Edit, it sounds like the Single Edit could be just an early fade.

On my "Platinum & Gold Collection" cd there is a smooth fade.
What appears on the cd single (both dj and commercial) is not an early fade of the LP and cassette single version as there is a segment from 1:16 - 1:25 of the LP version and cassette single that is removed from the cd single. |

The "single edit" from the promo CD single seems to have also been the UK single, and appears on Now 1991 (Virgin EMI PolyGram 27083, 1993). It runs 3:57, with a smooth fade.
It's also an easy edit from the LP version. The best-sounding LP version I have is on Razor & Tie's Living In The 90s (runs 4:31). The version on Time-Life's Sounds Of The '90s 1991 is a different EQ than the Razor & Tie CD, and has some odd clipping artifacts - I didn't like the sound as much. Here are instructions for creating the "single edit", based on the timings for the Razor & Tie CD: Keep 0:00.0-1:03.7 of the LP version. Edit on snare after the word "unwind". Remove the 16 beats from 1:03.7-1:13.8. Keep 1:13.8-4:07.3. Edit on the downbeat following the two repetitions of "sit back and unwind". This is into the LP version's fade. Put a 32-beat fade from 3:47.1-4:07.3. Your mixdown will run 3:57, with an edit at 1:03.7 and a 32-beat fade from 3:37-3:57. |

When this song was current, did most stations cue past the "drums please" and record scratch sounds? I seem to remember the song starting around the first drum hit, but it's a little foggy after all this time.
