My commercial 45, confirmed as Tear Drop 3014, has a listed time of (2:41),
but an actual time of (2:38). All current database CDs for this song run either (2:43) or (2:44). The song ends, and doesn't fade, so the 45 can't simply be an early fade of the CD versions. My 45 sounds sped up, however, which I believe accounts for its shorter length. |

Clearly there are two different pressings of this 45 Jim as my copy states a time of (2:41) but runs (2:45) and is slower than the versions that appear on the cd's listed in the database. There are all kinds of potential matrix numbers on my 45 so here are all of them: SG 110-A, delta 49054, 630301B.

Pat, your "busy matrix deadwax info" must've been pressed later in the game
than my 45 was. All I show is "SG110A", a faint "LW", and a faint "delta 3". Pretty barren, as deadwax data goes. Thanks for the "second pressing" heads up; I'll now be on the lookout for it! Edited by jimct |

The matrix number differences are an indication that Jamie/Guyden used multiple pressing plants to cover different parts of the country and do not necessarily mean that one pressing is earlier or later than the other. The mastering was also done separately, which would account for the speed variation decisions.
"Talk To Me" was a regional breakout before Jamie/Guyden picked up the master for national distribution. My copy is a first pressing, with "A div. of Crazy Cajun Ent, Inc, Conroe, Texas" on the bottom of the label and no mention whatsoever of Jamie/Guyden. The deadwax reads "SG 110-A JEFF SMITH'S TEXAS SOUND 630301B". There is no matrix number printed on the label. Listed time is 2:41, actual is 2:45. Vinyl quality is noisier than a Texas panhandle brushfire. The original Tear Drop 45 also had a different B-side: a cover of the Chubby Checker hit, " Pony Time," credited to Sunny And The Sunglows. The Jamie-distributed B-side - "Every Week, Every Month, Every Year - was credited to Sunny And The Sunliners. Edited by Yah Shure |

I have recently acquired a 1963 "Talk To Me" Tear Drop 3014 promo 45.
Not shockingly, since promos 45 are often pressed on higher quality materials, but I'm nonetheless still happy to report that the high quality of vinyl used for this DJ copy is 1000 times better than that of any previous stock 45 of it that I've ever seen. (Besides, I've always been anti-brushfire myself...) :) My long string of deadwax info is exactly the same as what Yah Shure has posted for his stock 45 copy up-thread, although my promo 45's label does note Jamie/Guyden dist. at the bottom of it, omitting Crazy Cajun. Apparently, the initial B-side, "Pony Time", also did make it onto some of the Jamie/Guyden-distributed 45 copies, because that track does happen to appear on the B-side of my promo 45 copy. And since I personally like to consider the actual time of the promo 45 as the tie-breaker when multiple stock 45 timings exist, my promo 45 copy has a listed time of (2:41) and an actual time of (2:45), so I'm now gonna go with (2:45) as my *official* length for the track. |
