My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:28), but an actual time of (3:32).

I noticed in DB this is listed as "45 Version" instead of
length. I always just assumed the 45 was the first half of
the LP version. Are there any edits?

If what you say is true, Mark, this is one of the many songs that Pat opts to use "version" for some undetermined reason. See also:

"Owner Of A Lonely Heart" by Yes
"Slow Ride" by Foghat
"We Are The World" by USA for Africa
...and several others that are really just early fades yet still say "version" in the database.

The side one of the 45 is an early fade of the album
version, and the other side is the rest of it.

I detect no differences in the mix.

I'm trying to recall the reasons Pat has opted for a "version" designation, when a fade of the album version yields the single version. If I recall, there was an instance where a new instrument was introduced (on the album version) after the single had already faded out, and that warranted a single "version" designation. Perhaps also if a new section of the song was introduced on the album version, but the single was faded out before it got to that point, then that's not considered a single length. Does anyone recall the other reasons Pat has given for these "single version" designations when the single is an early fade of the album? It would be good to know this when looking through the database. Up until a year ago, I had wrongly assumed that "single version" always meant either a different mix or an edit, and cleary that's not in synch with Pat's designations.

Yes there are examples as pointed out above where you could fade the full length of an album track to get the 45 version replicated but in cases where there is some significant difference after the 45 fade then I leave in the designation of "version". Examples might be additional verses, instrument solos, additional instrumentation or different ending such as a cold ending on the LP vs a fade on the 45.

Unfortunately though, that methodology makes the "version" vs. "length" designation unreliable. If it says "length" I can trust it, but "version" will always need additional research to determine if that is true. MM

Thanks for the bump, but unfortunately it doesn't answer my question.

My only source for the LP version of this song (have the 45 version on a couple of comps) is the Capitol 1940-2002 box set. However, this version
fades in, whereas I believe the correct LP version starts cold like the 45. Is that indeed the case?

The LP version does not fade in. My source is the 1993 Capitol Gold: The Best Of CD.
