Can someone tell me the difference between the 45 and LP versions of Under The Milky Way by The Church? All CDs listed in the database say "LP Version".

I picked up a copy of the 45 and compared it to the version that I have on CD (MTV's 120 Minutes), and could not hear differences on a cursory listen. The 45 was about the same length as well.

Is there a subtle difference in the mix that I missed?

Ed is correct. The database is incorrect. However, there is a DJ 45 that has an edit, which is probably the source Pat used for his info.

That is exactly what happened. The dj 45 runs (4:57) and clearly states "album version" on one side, and on the other which runs (3:58) it states "single edit".

Pat:

Just a head's up... The database currently states the following for The Church's "Under the Milky Way":

(dj copies of this 45 ran (4:57) noted as the )

This is likely another one of those old system glitches where the comment got cut off because quotation marks are present. And in addition to the DJ 45 info, we also know that commercial single copies run 4:55, as Ed pointed out previously.

To be clear, the LP and commercial 45 have the same 4:56 version that turns up on all the CD copies of this song.

The promo 45 has a 3:58 version that can be edited down from the LP/commercial 45 version. It's one edit and an early fade.

For sound quality, I choose Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 29 Rolling Stone Collection 1987-1988, which is most likely based on the mastering for the Church's Starfish CD, which I don't have. Others that use the same analog transfer are Rhino's Hang The DJ 1988 (differently EQ'd digital clone), Sony Germany's Pop And Wave Vol. 6 (a little too loud and clips), Madacy's Rock On 1988 Endless Summer Nights (absolute polarity inverted), and Time-Life's Modern Rock Vol. 7 1988-1989 (digitally identical). The only disc I have that uses a different analog transfer is Living In Oblivion Vol. 4, which is a little more compressed than the others.

Here are instructions for editing down to the promo 45 version, based on timings from Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 29 Rolling Stone Collection 1987-1988:

Keep from 0:00.0 to the first 16 beats of the bagpipe-sounding solo at 2:28.5.
Edit on downbeat at 2:28.5.
Remove the 32 beats from 2:28.5 to 2:42.6.
Keep from 2:42.6 to 4:14.4 of LP version. Stop on downbeat just before tinkly keyboards.
Put a 32-beat sinusoidal fade from 4:00 to 4:14.

Your mixdown will run 4:00 with an edit at 2:28.5 and a 32-beat fade from 3:46 to 4:00.

I finally came across the instructions and am a bit confused.

I trimmed from 2:28.5 - 2:42.6. If I put the fade from 4:00-4:14, the edit runs 4:14, not 4:00.

Sorry for the confusion; the times that I give correspond to the timings in the LP version.

If you cut the 2:28.5 to 2:42.6 portion first, then the fade will be from 3:46 to 4:00 on the portion that remains. (That 14-second-long faded portion corresponds to the 4:00-4:14 portion of the LP version.)

ron was kind enough to send me a copy of his single edit
from the promo cd single and it actually runs 4:04 and NOT
3:58 as pat listed at the beginning of the thread....can
someone time the promo 45 and confirm the actual run
time....3:58 or 4:04....the dj 45 may list a run time of
3:58 on the label but may actually run 4:04...just need
confirmation...
