Any way to recreate the single (3:56) from the full album
cut (5:35)? BTW, the 45 was issued as Asylum 69690. TIA |

Wow, I never heard "Playin It Cool" back then, but i did
hear, very briefly, his cover of "So Much In Love" from that LP. He did a nice job on it. So i too am now curious about the 45 edit of the title cut. But someone actually having it might be a miracle. -MM |

Agreed, but the real reason you (and everyone else our age - I know you're only a couple years older than me, MM) likely remember Schmit's cover of "So Much in Love" isn't from the radio, but rather the classic 1982 teen film that the song was originally recorded for, prominently featured in, and included on the soundtrack to - i.e., "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". While the song was eventually tacked on to Schmit's 1984 solo album, "Playin' it Cool", more than two years later (I've had both the soundtrack and his solo album on cassette since the mid '80s), I'm willing to wager that it's the movie you remember it from. So we now return you to the fantasy pool scene where Phoebe Cates' character emerges from the water and removes her bikini top in front of Judge Reinhold, to the tune of the Cars' "Moving in Stereo"... :-) ____________________________________________________________ Must-play '80s song of the day (chart hit, but not necessarily top 40 - and if you don't already have it, track it down, lol): "Ohhh...I used to laugh when I heard no man was an island/ Never believed two heads were better than one...mmm-hmmm/ But now I've had a change...of heart/ Ah, nothin's gonna keep...us apart" (clues: 1980; male vocals) |

I believe your "must-play 80s song" is "You've Got What I Need" by Shooting Star. I also love their 1982 hit "Hollywood", which actually got quite a bit of airplay on my local Top 40 station at the time.

Somebody did, as it turns out. I was the recipient of a needledrop of the promo 45, and to my ears it sounds like an early fade of the album cut. This record got some airplay back in the day in the SoCal market, then just seemed to disappear. Too bad, I consider it a minor "lost classic." |
