Interesting question here.

Especially since the 2000's were the apex of the promo/maxi single US releases there are NOW That's What I Call Music volumes that feature shorter edits (Missy Elliott Lose Control for example) that never appear on promo CD's or anything official from the label.

Are the NOW edits legit. Or are they created to get more tracks on the disc (especially before the NOW Next artists additions in the first half of the decade run of the series).

Any thoughts are helpful. Thanks.

Hello, PopArchivist:

To my knowledge, the Now series routinely uses the official clean radio edits, when applicable, for tracks appearing on each volume. Off the top of my head, I am not aware of any instances in which a shorter edit of a song was created exclusively for the series. Keep in mind that all tracks on the Now compilations are licensed by the major record labels.

Custom edits on VA comps are nothing new. Pretty much every K-Tel album from the 70s/early 80s had many of them...some skillfully done,
others not so much. The earliest I'm aware of is a mail order LP a friend of mine bought when we were in high school...this would have been
mid 60s.
OTOH, many of the songs on those K-Tel, Ronco, etc. albums were stereo when the singles were not.

Todd,

It's more that some of these "edits" on the NOW series appear nowhere else. I always presumed the record label gave them but why not put them on a promo CD then?
