Pat or Somebody Who Can Help Me,
I hope this isn't a dumb question, but can somebody explain what "Sundi" version means for this single? Was this the record company or something? Thanks. |

no question is dumb, maciav! the single was originally released on the Sundi label, that version being the hit. When it became a hit, the group signed with Warner Brothers and re-recorded the song. Both versions appear on re-issue CDs [short version of history].

Embarrased to admit, for some unexplained reason, one of my 5 personal all-time favorite songs. I'll provide exact time info for the mono 45 later (no time right now), but the Sundi 45 may just squeeze in FOUR full sings of the title at the very end; all stereo versions I've heard have it gone by the end of the second. Due to this, I allege that the mono 45 is longer than all Sundi stereo versions. I also remember a nice, solid bass line throughout on the 45. MIA on the stereo v, perhaps? I'll wait for confirmation from the "trained ears."

To Jim:
The Sundi album version was released in 180 degrees out-of-phase stereo which is why the bass seems buried in the mix. Andy |

I'm told that the best sounding version of the song (in-phase from the Sundi session master) is on the cd Rock & Roll: The First 50 Years: The Late 60's on Varese. So, if it still isn't as long on that cd as the original single, then someone goofed, since the label does try to get their songs out in as close to the original single versions as possible.

Live in stereo.

According to the database, Tom, "Love Can Make You Happy" runs 3:11 just like all other stereo CD appearances. Mono CD appearances all pretty much run around 3:17. I presume the latter time is the correct 45 length? If so, then Varese didn't get it right on the Rock & Roll The First 50 Years: The Late '60s disc.

Jim, I have a copy of the original Sundi 45. You're right, that record has an amazing amount of bass in mono! I have "Love(Can Make You Happy)" on a Dick Bartley compilation called "Love Songs". I think that version is in stereo. Doesn't have the same fat low end as the 45 but still sounds very good. You can tell the song wasn't recorded in a great studio but the performance is awesome. |

so, is the original LP length 3:11 and the 45 3:17? or did the LP too run 3:17 and all CDs fade it early at 3:11? as a matter of history...

My Sundi LP version runs (3:13) not (3:11) as stated on the record label and the Sundi 45 runs (3:19) exactly as stated on the record label.
