All CD entries in the database for Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" contain the comment ("Marks & Sparks" version). I guess I wasn't aware there was another version. Could someone please explain how the "Marks & Sparks" version compares to other versions of the song?

"Marks & Sparks" refers to the British Marks & Spencer department stores. Because of the BBC policy of banning songs with commerical references, the group had to replace "stealing clothes from Marks & Sparks" with "stealing clothes from unlocked cars".

Both versions were released in 1972 on Columbia 45673. The "unlocked cars" version has dead wax ZSS156999-1(letter-my copy has a "C"). The "Marks & Sparks" version has dead wax ZSS156999-2(letter). The version on the album is "Marks & Sparks".
BTW, after listening to it again I can't tell if he says "unlocked" cars or "unmarked" cars, although "unlocked" makes more sense to me. Edited by Paul Haney |

Did any stock copied have the umarked (or unlocked)version or was it just on the promo 45? I have two promos on this, one unlocked, one Marks and Sparks. I've seen lyrics lately refering the line by Bowie as Unlocked.

It's my understanding that both were released as stock copies, although I only have the "unlocked" version. |

My commercial 45, which is stereo, is the "Marks & Sparks" version, has deadwax as Paul Haney correctly describes above, and has a listed time of (3:33), but an actual time of (3:30).
