the cassingle issued as a&m 1563 contains the "7 inch listen baby mix" and runs 4:03 and is a completely different mix than the full 4:25 cd/lp version......this should be noted in the db...

Ed:

Just checking to make sure... The "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" is identical to the CD/LP version, right?

Sure, feel free to send me a copy if you don't mind, Ed. I'll need to take time to listen more closely, but I believe the CD/LP version is the one I've always been accustomed to hearing on radio stations. Back in the early '90s, record labels issued a number of Top 40 hits on commercial single in a remixed form for some unknown reason. Often these remixes were not the versions commonly played on radio. I'm wondering if we have another case of that here with Aaron Neville's "Everybody Plays the Fool"?

I believe *most* radio stations played the "7 inch Listen Baby" mix.

The original album/CD mix was quite lame (I admit, a very subjective opinion).

For what it's worth, TM issued the "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" on their CHR library.

I just listened to the "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" that Ed sent me. It turns out this is the version I've always heard played on radio, so I stand corrected. The "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" appears on Aaron Neville's Ultimate Collection CD, but it runs longer than the cassette single version. (The database incorrectly states this CD contains the LP version, which is what threw me off. I believe the 45 version also appears in extended form on other CDs in the database as well.) The LP version originating from Neville's Warm Your Heart CD is indeed a very different mix and I've never heard it on the local airwaves.

New discovery...

Upon closer examination, the version of "Everybody Plays the Fool" on the Ultimate Collection CD (Hip-O 314520192) cannot be edited to match the 45 version. Yes, they are both the "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" and are both identical up until about the 2:27 mark. However, an edit occurs on the cassette single that cannot be replicated from the CD. That's because the bass line is removed on the cassingle from 2:29 to 2:39 during the verses: "It may be factual, it may be cruel. Everybody plays the fool". The bass remains intact during these same verses on the Ultimate Collection disc.

That said, the database should have a comment for the Ultimate Collection CD to the effect of: (neither the 45 nor LP version, though this is the same remix as the 45 version). I believe this is also holds true for at least two other CDs in the database:

Radio Waves of the '90s - Pop Hits (Universal Special Products 314583609)
Smokey Robinson/Aaron Neville - Winning Combinations (Universal Special Products 440068515)

According to my research, the A&M label reissued Aaron Neville's "Everybody Plays the Fool" on CD single in 1996. The disc also contains the track "Betcha By Golly Wow". Does anyone have this CD single who can verify if the correct 45 version of "Everybody Plays the Fool" is on it?
