CORRECTED INFO: Roscoe, you are correct that the "Soft Intro" (commercial 45) has a synth intro. This audio is unique to that version.
The other version issued on a promo 45, the "Rock Intro," can be re-created using the LP version. Edited by aaronk |

I just received the promo 45, which includes an insert noting the label errors. It reads:
"Due to an error in the printing of the labels, the first copy of the single that you received had the intros reversed. This corrected copy is printed in the way it was always meant to be. Rock Intro - 4:14 Soft Intro - 4:01" I am a little confused by Aaron's comment below because the 4:01 version labeled as the "Soft Intro" is clearly the version which includes the unique synth intro. The "Rock Version", on the other hand, includes the standard LP intro. In fact, it is (correctly) referred to on the outer sleeve as "Edit of LP Version - Rock Intro".

After all these years, the confusion is finally cleared up :) The copy of the promo I was looking at had the 45 labels reversed in error. Therefore, when I played the side labeled "Rock Intro," it played the version with the synthesizer at the beginning (commercial 45 version with unique audio). Now we know that this was a mistake by the record company, and it's the "Soft Intro" version that has the synthesizer beginning. |

To re-create the "rock edit," (side A of the radio promo) starting from the album version from Rock A Little:
Remove about the first five seconds, basically cutting the run of keyboards in half. Fade from silence to Stevie's first vocals... and it sounds to me like a linear fade up to "I will love you..." From what is left, delete about 13 seconds from 2:57 to about 3:10, on the downbeat. That's it! The LP fade appears to match the single (although the video I used cuts off the very last "how can I love you?" that Stevie sings on the LP version before silence). My file became 4:17, which suggests either the 4:14 length is a little short or the single runs a little faster than the LP version. I'll leave that decision up to someone with vinyl to compare. Based on the YouTube video of the single I used, the single is at: 0:00 -- faster than the LP version 1:30 -- in sync with the LP version 2:00 -- slower thank the LP version 3:30 -- in sync with the LP version It's hard to imagine this is intentional. Is it stretched tape? A bad turntable? A bad CD of the LP? I don't know. Edited by NightAire |

Wiped out first post I made on this since I found the
music files. Here is what I have: the 3:51 song is from The Very Best Of Stevie Nicks. It is an edit that is a little different mix of the soft side of the Promo single. Number 2 is the promo mix of the rock intro, but it fades at 4:01. Now it gets interesting. Version 3 says video version at 4:17, which should be the rock version. The last one I have is "Time/Space version remix at 4:37 and is a dance version with major differences from any other version. Hope I didn't muddy the waters too much! Edited by garye |

Gene - Using Aaron's files as a reference:
The 45 runs 125.8 BPM until the last little bit of the song, which runs at 125.4 BPM. The promo 45 runs at 126.0 until 0:41, then 125.8 BPM until the last little bit of the song, which runs at 125.4 BPM. If the version on Timespace (1991) is truly the LP version, then it runs at 125.5 BPM until about 0:45, then at 125.4 until the last little bit of the song. I wouldn't worry much about the slight difference in tempos. This all strikes me as normal variations in tape machine speeds. This was very common in the age of drum machine and analog tape decks. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

GaryE: Are you saying there was a promo version that was an early fade of the "rock intro" (which is an edit of the LP version)? I never came across such a thing; I'd be interested to know your source.
CFTP: That's good news. I know some people want to get the tempo / pitch exactly right on single versions and I just didn't have enough info to confirm how close the LP version was to the single. :) |

The info I have says "single edit from LP rock version". I can send you all the edits I have if you PM me. Listening to each should give you an idea what each version is. |

Just a note because it's not mentioned here: The single-disc version of the 2019 Rhino release "Stevie Nicks – Stand Back" contains the 45 "Soft Intro" edit of "I Can't
Wait" as well as the single versions of Stevie's other hits. It's worth picking up to get all the right versions. https://www.discogs.com/release/13422776-Stevie-Nicks-Stand- Back |
