My commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (3:15), but an actual time of (3:18).

I have just acquired a promo 45 for this song. Both sides stereo. One side
is exactly the same as my commercial 45's description above, expect that it says (Long Version) on the promo 45. The other side, which states (Short Version), has a listed time of (2:15), and an actual time of (2:18). Not a typo - exactly one minute shorter, on both counts. (Machine- stamped deadwax for the short v: "BPKS -5120-1S".) The single bagpipe intro is shortened, and the "Hmmm" group voice, and then the full band kicks in at the :14 1/2 second mark. This version is clearly sped up, vs. the longer version. Then, at (1:55), the full band finishes, and the single bagpipe returns, until fade out. Once I heard this short version today, it really has now jogged my memory, back to 1972 Top 40 radio. For some reason, I really liked the song back then. And I believe both shortening the solo bagpipe intro, and speeding it up the way they did was spot on the right move for airplay, and really did help it to nearly make the Top 10. Man, I thought we'd identified all of these Top 40 hit long/short promos already. Apparently not! Edited by jimct |
