I grabbed a copy tonight. All songs have extra limiting which I feel hurts the dynamic range of these recordings. Couple of notes:

Question 67 and 68. Single version. Sort of. The 1971 stereo stock single version has a different edit point than this version. Background: The 1971 stereo stock single edits out the first chorus by jumping to the second chorus, right before the drums of the second chorus. So you get the drums that lead into the second chorus. This version has the edit slightly later so you don't get the same drum effect. This edit however does match the edit on the mono Hall Of Fame single and may match the mono 1971 DJ 45 (which I don't have.)So this edit, like Chicago Greatest Hits Volume 2, does not exactly match the stereo stock single. It may match the mono DJ and it does match the Hall of Fame reissue 45.

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is: Not only is it an unsuccessful attempt at recreating the DJ 45 (it is an edit of the album mix with the talking), there appears to be a mastering error which causes a jump at the beginning of the track. Timing stays constant but the audio jumps. Very sloppy and I doubt this is an unknown edit.

Beginnings: Unsuccessful attempt at recreating the single version.. unless this is an unreleased stereo edit from 1971. Misses a one note edit which happens twice, once before the drum break, and again on the fade out. If you know the song you'll know the issue.

CD does have single edits of 25 or 6 to 4, Wishing You Were Here (DJ edit), and some others. It also has some of the later single versions too.

The limiting is unfortunate and the obvious mastering glitch is dissapointing.

Are you saying the version on GHV2 is not the 45 version either?

Any idea who at Rhino was in charge of the mastering/mixing of this CD?

I'm saying that GH2 CD is not an exact edit match as the three stereo stock 45s I have. The stereo stock 45 is a sloppy edit and it appears that somebody re-did it at a slightly later point for GH2. (It deserved to redone, it wasn't very good on the stock 45) I'm not sure if it was done for the vinyl GH2, I don't have a copy of that anymore. The GH2 edit and new Best of Chicago edit may match the DJ 45 mono edit, which might not have been as sloppy, but I don't have that. The GH2 edit DOES match the mono Columbia Hall Of Fame reissue 45.

I'm ignoring the Collectables Hall Of Fame reissue, they did edits themselves. I'm A Man on Collectables doesnt' match the Columbia edits.

For Best of Chicago, Audio Supervision was Jeff Magdid. Remastering by David Donnelly at DNA Mastering, Studio City, CA.

I don't believe there was any remixing done. Just limiting and some new editing on certain tracks like Beginnings.

Just got my CD in today...

1) Questions 67 & 68 seems to match the GH2 version, but the fade on the end seems faster than the GH2 version.

2) Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is has a wrong edit at the beginning.

3)Beginnings matches the stereo 45 version I have, but with an earlier fade.

4)(I've Been) Searching So Long fades at 4:15. I think thats earlier than the 45.

Overall, the rest seem to be
close to 45 length, but it seems the fades are earlier than the versions I have now. Bottom line: If you have the correct 45 versions already, save your $$. Mine's probably going on ebay by Monday.

If the running times are correct in All Music Guide, "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" fades also about ten seconds early on this disc, just like my "Heart of Chicago" Japan import. I Just ordered the "Chicago Story" import, which alleged has the correct edit of that song.

My copy of "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" from the Chicago Story import CD runs 3:49 and includes the beginning drum beat from "Get Away."

You're right, eriejwg. The drum hits that begin the "Get Away" portion of "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" can be faintly heard during the final few seconds on the commercial 45 before the fade out is complete. However, the song fades out slightly earlier on the DJ 45 and therefore the "Get Away" drum hits cannot be heard. I have replicated both the commercial and DJ 45 lengths from CD. I've never been a fan of the "Get Away" segment at all (in fact, I think it totally ruins the mood of an otherwise beautiful, tender ballad), so I'm naturally more partial to the earlier fade on the DJ 45 length.
