I have the promo CD single for this, Reprise PRO-CD-4408, 1990. It has three tracks:
The Edit is available on the promo disc Hitmakers Vol. 45, November 16, 1990 (printed 4:06, actual 4:04), which is digitally exactly 1.982 dB louder than track 2 of the promo CD single. In the likely event that you don't have the promo CD single, the 45, or the Hitmakers disc, here are instructions for creating the Edit from the LP version. Times are taken from The Rolling Stone Collection - Sounds Of The Eighties - 1988-1989 (Time-Life R988-30, 1995), which has excellent sound quality. (Presumably, the mastering is based on Heart Shaped World, because the samples line up with the Album Version on the CD single.) Beginning the beat count with the downbeat, keep the 31 beats from 0:00.0-0:17.8 of the LP version. Edit on what would be a snare hit, but there's no actual snare hit. Remove the 32 beats from 0:17.8-0:35.0. Keep the 105 beats from 0:35.0-1:31.1. Edit on downbeat. Remove the 16 beats from 1:31.1-1:39.6. Keep the 147 beats from 1:39.6-2:58.1. Edit on snare. Remove the 16 beats from 2:58.1-3:06.6. Keep the 109 beats from 3:06.6-4:04.8. Edit on downbeat. Remove the 16 beats from 4:04.8-4:13.4. Keep 4:13.4-4:50.0 (end) of LP version. You mixdown will run 4:07.3 (with outro silence), with edits at 0:17.9, 1:14.0, 2:32.5 and 3:30.7. Great song, too! |

Am I right that the 1989 "edit" and 1991 "edit" are identical in mix and edit points?

The full-length album came out in 1989, but was there a single release for "Wicked Game" that year? The only singles I see listed are from 1990. The song peaked at #2 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart in January 1991, #19 on the R&R Pop chart in February 1991, and #6 on the Hot 100 in March 1991.

This label says published in 1989, but I don't know if they mean this vinyl or the original recording:
This label (promoting the movie) says copyright 1990: |

The promo CD does have a phonographic copyright ℗ of 1989, but that doesn't necessarily mean the promo CD was released that year. I believe that has more to do with when the song was copyrighted (in the year it was first recorded and/or released in any format). Because it was released on his 1989 album, it gets a ℗1989. As far as I know, though, the promo CD wasn't put out until around Oct/Nov 1990, more than a full year after the LP was released. The decision to do so was likely based on its use in the movie.

As a side note, the ℗ does not mean "published," although it is often mistakenly identified as such.
