my cassingle issued as warner 18511 contains a non described version which runs 4:03.....it is the same as the live cd version, with the first 0:06 of applause edited out and faded out quickly.....i don't know if the cd

(S) (4:03) Warner Brothers 78328 Very Best Of

contains the correct version, but the time looks like it might....also...the cassingles face states a run time of 3:58, which is incorrect

It appears that the studio version of "Have I Told You Lately" received some airplay (charting separately and just missing the top 40 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart). Does anyone know if a promo CD single was issued for the studio version? I can't find any details when doing a search in the usual places online. All I see is the promo for PRO-CD-6161, which I do have and contains the Unplugged version.

Aaron, there was never a WB promo CD single for the studio version of
"Have I Told You Lately". This studio version was included on his
"Vagabond Heart" CD, which entered the LP charts in 4/1991. There were
3 promo CD singles issued from this album, in this sequence: "Rhythm Of
My Heart" (3/91) (PRO-CD-4742), "The Motown Song" (7/91) (PRO-CD-
4857), and "Broken Arrow" (10/91) (PRO-CD-4864). The next Rod Stewart
promo CD single was "Your Song", in 4/92 (CDP 669) on Polydor, taken
from the tribute CD, "Two Rooms: Celebrating The Songs Of Elton John &
Bernie Taupin". Next, and only *then* did the live version of "Have I Told
You Lately" get released as a single, in 4/93.

Here's my understanding as to what began/prompted the 20-week "Have I
Told You Lately" airplay chart run in 12/1992, 20 months after its "parent
LP" was released. There was a Rod Stewart concert he performed in L.A.
on Valentine's Day 1992. It was recorded, released to video later during
1992, and was called "Vagabond Heart Tour". From this, his version of the
song started to garner some "buzz". And while Stewart was soon to start
his decline as a superstar Top 40 artist, in 12/92, this had not yet
happened in earnest. And since there was no "current" Rod Stewart
product out at the time, radio wasn't necessarily averse to spiking in a
"buzz track" by him, during the slow-for-new-product holiday season.

I recall that some stations out west, where the airplay breakout for it first
happened, were very aware of the original LA live show, and started
playing the "video version" of "Have I Told You Lately" on-air, once that
got released. Other US radio stations, likely not knowing all of the song's
"buzz details", or that a live version existed/where to get it/weren't sent a
video, probably just then opted to play the song from a source they did
happen to have on hand - his old "Vagabond Heart" CD. The chart books
imply that it was the studio version that got *all* of the late 1992/early
1993 "Airplay Chart" airplay, but I recall that both the live and the studio
versions were both getting radio airplay then, for the reasons I've just
detailed.

My understanding at the time was that the song's buzz had nothing at all
to do with anything WB did. It 100% developed on its own. But it surely
helped WB to sell more Vagabond Hearts CDs and videos, making them
very happy. Surely, some WB suit then came up with, "Rod's still got
nothing imminent coming out from us. I bet we'd make even more money
on this thing if we officially release/promote a live version to radio." And
he was right.

Hope that helps, Aaron. All I can do is offer up is my now somewhat
fuzzy, best radio recollections, as it was going down at the time. Does
anyone else in radio at the time have any similar "Have I Told You Lately"
situation memories?

Thank you, Jim, for the excellent rundown on that one. There is such a wealth of information we are able to share here that simply cannot be found anywhere else.
