Though not listed in the database, I think it hit #33 on the Hot 100.
Was there a promo 45 edit for this song? |

Actually, it was the (non-charting) B-side of "Girls' School" which did peak at #33. Different story in England, where "Mull Of Kintyre/Girls' School" stayed at #1 for 9 weeks! |

Funny, at the time in my area, I heard "Mull of Kintyre" more. In 1977, the first commercial station I worked at, we didn't have the greatest record service, if any. I don't remember playing either track. Over the years, I had become a fan of "Mull..." more.

Yes, John, there was a DJ 45 edit. "Mull" was the AC side of the 45, and although it only reached #45 on that chart, it was a huge hit in my market. We didn't play the "Girls' School" edit on the flip side at all, other than when it appeared during AT40. To this day, the longer commercial "Mull" 45 sounds foreign to me (and not in a Scottish kind of way. ;)
The actual time for the DJ 45 "Mull Of Kintyre" edit is (3:32). ![]() |

Never understood why this one wasn't a hit. It's not like his career was dead, his follow-up "With A Little Luck" went to #1. The only place I ever heard it was on WFIL during a business trip to Philadelphia.
If I'm not mistaken, "Girls School" was also an edit on the promo single making it one of a very short list of records where both the A & B sides had dj edits. Edited by Hykker |

Capitol may have thought "Mull Of Kintyre" to be "too European" for the American market. But there probably weren't many label staffers still around who hadn't felt that being "too Japanese" had been a problem for Kyu Sakamoto in 1963. Then again, "Sukiyaki"'s success was initially sparked by airplay, rather than Capitol's promotion efforts. "Mull" never got wide enough U.S. airplay to break it open.
"Girls' School" wasn't really strong enough to be A-side material. But "Mull Of Kintyre" has a timeless quality to it that sounds fresh and unique even today. ![]() Edited by Yah Shure |

Was working on putting together a complete Paul McCartney top 40 hits compilation for a friend and was having trouble coming up with a copy of "Girls' School" since it's not available as a bonus track on the "London Town" LP offered by iTunes. "Mull of Kintyre" was available, though.
Thought it might interest everyone to know that, though it never charted in Billboard, on both Record World and Cash Box. "Mull of Kintyre" was listed as a b-side hit alongside "Girls' School". So, why wasn't it that way in Billboard I have to wonder. Edited by JMD1961 |
