Although not in the database, this song peaked at #30 in Billboard, in 2/60. I recently picked up his box set, "The Classic Singles", and this song is one of only a handful of his Top 40 hits to not be included on it. To my knowledge, the song currently exists nowhere in the world on a CD. But if anyone out there has knowledge to the contrary, please share!

Jim:

I have "Time and the River" on a Nat "King" Cole U.K. import CD called Singles on EMI (catalog #99707). You can view more info about the disc at the All Music Guide website by clicking here.

Further research indicates the song has appeared on several other CDs, including the Songs from St. Louis Blues/Looking Back 2-albums-on-1 CD issued by the Collector's Choice label in 2007 (catalog #8282).

Kinda chuckled when I saw the description for track 19 "Look No Further" (no strings and Todd's vocals) - didn't know you were so talented, Todd!

Thanks, Todd, for that very valuable tidbit! While we're on the subject, any knowledge on a CD source for my last remaining missing Nat "King" Cole Top 40 hit, 1964's "I Don't Want To See Tomorrow?"

Nice pickup, John, and forgive me - the last thing I ever mean to do is stick anybody else with looking for MY wants!   :)   But there are two Nat "King" Cole box sets; I just picked up "Classic Singles", and didn't really wanna go the other one, too, just for the one song. Also, since that "2-fer" CD is on Collector's Choice, it appears that Pat will need to add that CD's particulars into the database.

I have "I Don't Want to See Tomorrow" on a 2-albums-on-1 Capitol U.K. import CD called Dear Lonely Hearts/I Don't Want to Be Hurt Anymore (catalog #71907). The disc's contents can be viewed by clicking here. So, Jim ole buddy, I believe this will complete your quest of having all of Nat "King" Cole's Top 40 hits on CD!

Even though I wasn't born until seven years after Nat passed away, his incredible foresight convinced himself to leave the track unfinished until I came along... and there were "no strings" attached! ;-) (By the way, how did you upload the giant smiley face?)

I don't have the UK Singles set, but I purchased a download of "Time And The River" from iTunes Canada from a set with that title and with the same cover, so I'm 99% sure they're the same. The version I downloaded is not the 45 version but the version from the 1965 Looking Back LP.

The Looking Back version is the 1960 hit single version but with some additional overdubs. If you listen to the Singles (i.e. Looking Back) version, you can hear additional percussion in the left channel and a guitar overdub in the right channel that are not on the 45.

The good news is that when Collectors Choice issued the Looking Back album as part of the 2-fer Todd mentions above, they went back to the original non-overdubbed tapes. The version on the Collectors Choice album is the hit version (albeit in stereo).

Thanks for pointing out the differing versions of Nat "King" Cole's "Time and the River", Paul. Well, it looks like I'm now going to have to pick up that Collector's Choice CD, which fortunately is still in print.
