All 45 version CD appearances of Sammy Davis Jr.'s "What Kind of Fool Am I" are in mono. Does anyone know if the 45 version can successfully be created in stereo by editing the LP version, or does the 45 contain unique audio that would render a stereo 45 edit unattainable?

The mono 45 edits out from 1:49 to 2:08 of the instrumental break. There's no unique audio on the 45 that I can detect. I would assume a stereo 45 edit could be made from the LP version.

Thanks, David. I'll work on getting a commercial 45 dub and see if I can replicate it from the LP version.

My commercial 45, confirmed as Reprise 20,048, has no listed time, but
an actual time of (3:17). Deadwax is a handwritten "45R-20,048B (445)",
with a circled "2" at the end. (There is also a "triangle 44232-X" present as
well, which I recall from past Yah Shure posts, indicates output from a
particular pressing plant, that I can't recall at the moment.) However, the
(3:17) actual length of my stock 45 closely parallels the many current db
versions (all stereo) of the song that are noted as "LP Version". So I'm now
a bit confused.

So next I pull up the U.S. 45 label scan of the song on Discogs, and it
looks exactly like my copy does. But then I see upthread that David has
made reference to a mono 45's edit points. Now I'm not sure if his 45
copy is Canadian or U.S., or if David possibly got his above-supplied
45/edit info in another way. By pulling/listening to 1 of the 5 mono CD
versions in Pat's db, all which run (2:58), and are noted as "45 version". If
David did do this, I don't blame him a bit, as he trusts the db. But since
the db's "45 version" info doesn't jive with my 45 copy, I then considered
that there could've been two different stock 45 lengths issued for this
song in '62. Which is very possible. But then something else crossed my
mind.

By 1962 standards, (3:17) was quite long for an AM radio hit. So I got to
thinking. Could Reprise have possibly issued a shorter version of the song
on their promo 45? And is *that* possible DJ 45 short version the one that
has turned up in mono on those 5 db CDs? Well, I don't currently own that
promo 45, so I just browsed on-line, to see if I could locate one. Sure
enough, one was available. Luckily, it included a label scan, and, for what
it's worth, it did show a listed time of (2:58). I just bought it, and I will
report back when I receive it. Crossing fingers that it actually runs (2:58),
or it's gonna put us back to square one, as to exactly where this shorter
mono version came from.

Jim I have a commercial copy of this 45 with matrix number 45-R 20048-B-RE2 and there is no printed time on the label but my copy runs (2:58) so there are 2 different pressings of this 45! Can you compare your "long" 45 version to the LP versions to see if the :04 time difference between the (3:21) cd appearances and the "long" 45 version is due to speed differences?

yes, my info was based on one of the DB entries labelled 45 version.
