Database CD entries containing the 45 version of Brandy's "Brokenhearted" runs 4:42. I have the song on my Promo Only Mainstream Radio subscription CD series, but it only clocks in at 4:29. I'm wondering if this may be an official radio edit. Does anyone have a promo single of "Brokenhearted" who can relay the track listing and run time information?

Todd, again we got in two different promo CD singles for this one in '95, and they include some juicy new details. Perhaps the Promo Only CD you reference included the "SoulPower Mix" from below. Looking at the two promo "stock" #'s below, the one I have listed second does have an earlier #, so perhaps that one was actually issued first by Atlantic/chosen by Promo Only. I don't exactly recall which one came in first to the station, but because I filed them in the order I did likely means that we played the "Radio Edit" on-air as a current.

Brandy-"Brokenhearted" (PRCD 6375)
1-Radio Edit (listed & actual 3:15)
2-Power Mix (listed 4:29; actual 4:44)

Brandy-"Brokenhearted" (PRCD 6175)
1-SoulPower Mix (listed 4:29; actual 4:30)
2-Acoustic Mix (listed 5:18; actual 5:17)
3-SoulPower Groove Mix (listed 4:29; actual 4:45)
4-LP Version (listed & actual 5:52)

This appears to be a complicated one. My U.S. cassette single states (apparently in error) that it contains the "Soulpower Mix" and states a run time of 4:29. I timed it at 4:43. (The database says 4:45 but, as has been previously discussed on this board, no cassette deck runs at exactly the proper speed.) The only other single formats in which this song was commercially released in the U.S. were "maxi" formats.

I only have the first of the two promo CDs listed by Jim (PRCD 6375 - with a sticker on the jewel case stating "featuring Wayna Morris from Boyz II Men". Morris does not appear on the original LP version). On the other promo CD, the run time given by Jim for the "SoulPower Mix" does not match the run time of the commercial single. I made a casual comparison of the cassette single and the "Power Mix" and was unable to detect a difference.

So it would appear that the cassette single actually contains the "Power Mix" and not the "Soulpower Mix" as its cover claims.

Jim, are the differences between the "Power Mix" and the "SoulPower Mix" obvious, or is it possible there are subtle differences I failed to detect?

The CD appearances identified in the database as the "45 version" are indeed the 45 version.

is the radio edit on jim's promo cd single a different mix than the soulpower/power mix?...i only ask this because the soulpower mix which is on the cassingle states on the rear that "wanya morris appears coutesy of motwon records" which leads me to beleive the 3:15 radio edit is the same mix, just shorter...also because of what paul c said about his promo cd single

Paul, forgive me, I didn't see the question you'd asked of me back in November until just now. For the last several and the next several months, I have been/will be deeply involved with another big music project. And I'll be back on here daily, as before, as soon as that mega-task is finally finished. In the meantime, though, I will shoot out the versions of "Brokenhearted" asked about here over to Ed for his analysis ASAP, I promise.

I thought I'd bring up Jim's promo CD single info for Brandy's "Brokenhearted" in case it was accidentally overlooked for database consideration. (And a big thank you to Jim for not only helping me answer my initial inquiry, but for also uncovering the short 3:15 "Radio Edit" that was likely played by many Top 40 stations around the country.)
