My commercial 45 (confirmed as Philips 40393, is styrene, with deadwax info of "PHW1-38757-3") has a listed time of (3:37), but an actual time of (3:42). All 16 of the current database CDs that include this song have run times within :01 of the 45's listed time, at either (3:37) or (3:38). All 16 CDs are stereo. Not all that unusual, but a bit more perplexing in this instance, since the Rhino label (for some unknown reason) has gone to the bother to issue three separate, supposedly extensive CD group compilations since the late 80's (the 3-CD "Anthology", "25th Anniversary Collection", and the especially-heartbreaking, recent "Jersey Beat" Box Set). In each instance, Rhino lazily opted to again include the same, already issued-to-death stereo mixes, with Rhino just basically changing the CD's title, doing new liner notes and creating new packaging for each. (Gee, thanks..!) No wonder Rhino was disappointed in sales for "Jersey Beat", of course blaming "no one buys CDs anymore" as the reason. Well I wasn't, I blame Rhino itself. Hmmm, what will more consumers buy: A) What they already have/has been available forever on CD or, B) What they don't already have/hasn't been available on CD? Incredibly, Rhino's answer? "A". Rhino also made this exact same mistake with the way they anthologized the Monkees over the years, but thankfully they have recently (and finally) come to their senses by issuing all of the group's early LPs in both stereo and mono mixes. I both appreciate and thank Rhino for doing that. Perhaps the label will soon do the same for Mr. Valli & Co.! (End of rant - sorry - no pun intended, but this one really did seem to get "under my skin"!) Bottom line: the hit 45 mono version is :04/:05 longer than all CD versions. A final question. Did Rhino simply fade their stereo mixes early for CD inclusion, trying to match up times, since they thought the original 45's listed time was accurate at (3:37)? Does anyone happen own the original LP, "2nd Vault Of Golden Hits" who can check on its run time there to find out?

Jim, I don't have 2nd Vault Of Golden Hits, but FWIW I timed the mono version of "...Skin" on the UK Ace import CD Edizione D'Oro and it runs (3:46.9). This might be one of those cases where the import will have to do in order to get that little bit longer length (and then some.)
Of course, that would be much easier (and cheaper) if the Ace CD was still in print. Edited by Yah Shure |

How curious that the singles are mono up until 1966 on "Jersey Beat." I hadn't noticed that before, as I don't own the set.
I do have "Edizione d'Oro," Jim. All but "Let's Hang On," "Dawn," and "Save It For Me" are mono on that disc. |

The 4 Seasons are definitely an act that needs a true "singles" set with the original mono mixes, given that the stereo versions of many of their hits were totally different recordings. "Tell It To The Rain" is especially painful for me to listen to in stereo as it's not even close to the mono version. |

All of you are correct.
The Four Seasons singles had such a punch to them that aren't there in stereo. I agree with Hykker, "Tell It To The Rain" just isn't the same with the mix in stereo. It has a vocal mix in one channel with the intro in the other. All of those great Philips/Smash/Mercury singles deserve some mono treatment. |

Why yes, there is someone! The label says 3:37, but the track runs 3:41 and it sounds lame - no highs or lows and no punch. It's really a shame that most 4 Seasons multis are gone forever. For those who prefer vinyl, look for the 1975 Private Stock double LP The Four Seasons Story. Skin sounds wonderful on that one, though it runs 3:38. Beware, my promo LP has noisy vinyl, but who knows if they are all that way? Just think, if the Seasons had not contracted to do that compilation, the multis and some masters would still be available! GM Edited by Gary Mack |

Gary, I have two copies of that Private Stock set. The $7.98 list copy (7000) is a really nice and quiet Columbia pressing. Within a year, Private Stock upped the list price to $9.98 (9000). I can't comment on that one, as mine's still sealed.

The version on the Ace CD runs slower than my stereo counterpart, which
accounts for its longer running time than the 45 timing. I donno if this is the 45 speed running longer or if it is indeed slower than the 45. |

I compared my Philips 45 stock copy [(3:43.6) actual time] with the slower Ace Edizione d'Oro CD track, and the only difference is in the speeds. The fadeout is identical. Time compress the CD track by 98.55% and you've got the mono 45 (under your skin.)

Hykker: The database currently doesn't note a difference between the 45 and LP for "Tell It to the Rain". So are you of the opinion then that all stereo appearances on CD should have a "LP mix" or "LP version" comment? Edited by Todd Ireland |
