I just picked up a copy of the Razor & Tie CD "Into The Night".

The database states the version on the CD is the 45 version of "When
Smokey Sings" however, the version includes an additional verse that I
don't think is on the 45 so I would assume that it is the LP version. It
also does not include the count off.

Am curious to know more about Into The Night, since I'm a big fan of the early-to-mid-'90s Razor & Tie compilations.

I have exactly two compilations that include the true 45 version (sax solo), including the opening count-off:
  • EMI UK's 2-CD Now 10 (1987)
  • EMI UK's 2-CD Now 1987 (1993; uses same analog transfer as W. German CD single)
I have five compilations that include the true LP version (sung bridge instead of sax solo), including the opening count-off:
  • Priority's Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 8 Dance Party (1993, very bright EQ)
  • JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1985-1989 (1994, uses same analog transfer as Absolutely)
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 19 The Late '80s (1996, differently EQ'd digital clone of Only Rock 'N Roll 1985-1989)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 4 1986-1987 (1999, digitally exactly 1.45 dB louder than Absolutely)
  • Sony Germany's 2-CD Pop And Wave Vol. 8 (1999, uses same analog transfer as the Priority disc and also is too bright)
I have three compilations that include the LP version (sung bridge instead of sax solo) but cut off the opening count-off:
  • PolyGram Europe's Hits On CD Vol. 8 (1987)
  • Swaitek's promo 50-CD A List Disc 40 (1994, probably no noise reduction)
  • Realm's 3-CD Greatest Hits Of The '80s (2002, too loud and clips severely - avoid)
My choice for the 45 version is the W. German CD single.

My choice for the LP version is Absolutely, which is a remarkably good-sounding disc. It sounds better than any CD versions I've heard for the four Lexicon Of Love tracks, and it's probably pretty inexpensive nowadays. I myself have a UK pressing (I got it before the album was released in the US), and the US version swaps out one of the unnecessary remixes at the end of the disc. I think the mastering is the same, but I've never checked.

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Report: the version on Into The Night (2002) is
compressed pretty severely. Just FYI. (Thanks, Fetta!)

I believe the NOW 1987 CD from the Millennium Series in 1999 in the UK also has the single version. It runs 4:23. Is that you show as the proper time?

That time sounds about right. Both the 45 and the LP
versions run about 4:23.

Pat currently lists a (7:03) "remixed" CD in his db. I believe this version to be
the "Miami Mix" from my stock 12" single (Mercury 888-726-1):

Side 1:
1-7" Version (listed time 4:21)
2-Bonus Beats (listed 4:38)
3-Detroit Mix (listed 6:47)

Side 2:
1-Miami Mix (listed 7:02)
2-(a different track, "Chicago (Parts I & II)" (listed 6:38))
