I never realized a 45 was issued for this song:
http://www.discogs.com/Alan-Parsons-Project-I-Robot-Dont-Let -It-Show/release/1914184 I'm not sure if it was a top 40 hit but can someone shed some light on this? Was there an edited version available? |

Don't Let It Show was the US "A" side, peaking at #92. I only have the promo 45 which doesn't have the b-side, so I can't help you with the I Robot question...sorry.

Bringing this one back up to the surface...I just discovered there are
two more 45's on this one. One is a Spain release with a printed run time of 3:19. The other is a French release with a printed run time of 4:15. Does anyone have these that can describe how this song was edited down from the album? |

A collector friend of mine who's a big Alan Parsons fan happened to own a
U.S. Arista 0288 stock 45. Today he sent me over both sides' files, as well as a few other details I wanted to include here. -Don't Let It Show (listed 3:37; actual 3:44) (deadwax "2492-RE1-S"). (Discogs states the LP v length to be (4:21)). -I Robot (listed 6:06; actual 6:01) (deadwax "2493-S X"). (Discogs states the LP v length to be (6:06)); I attribute the :05 time difference to a combination of 1) the fact that this instrumental track fades in very softly, and 2) the end fade on the 45 sounds "unnaturally quick" to me. But basically, it's the same as the LP version. I believe Chendagam just acquired a 45 copy of this one himself, but I figured that since my buddy already went to the bother to dub his 45 for the cause, that I'd pass along/attach his particulars to this thread, for the official record. |

Thanks for the info Jim. I agree with the actual and run times for
"Don't Let It Show." This version is available on "The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project." I Robot is very interesting because most of the comps such as "The Best Of" and "The Instrumental Works" contain the "unnaturally quick" fade that Jim is talking about. This can be attributed to the fact that on the "I Robot" album it slightly crossfades into "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You." My 45 contains a very nice fade out with a listed time of 6:06 and an actual time of 5:57. This could just be a difference of equipment (I am using a Technics SL- 1200MK2). Although "The Instrumental Works" and "The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project" contain an unnatural fade it still sounds slightly different than my 45 (45 seeming longer but 4 seconds shorter than the actual run time of my comps both actually running 6:01). "The Essential Alan Parsons Project" crossfades into "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" just as it originally does on the "I Robot" LP. I'm no audio export so I could be wrong but it just sounds to me like the fadeout on the 45 is much smoother than the fadeout on my compilation albums. I may need a second set of ears. I'm not sure if it's time to look at matrix numbers here to see if there are indeed two different pressings of this commercial 45. Side A: 2492 - REI - S - 2 Side B: 2493 - S - 2 All in all it is still the LP version. Probably way too much discussion for this non-top 40 b-side anyway. |

Way too much discussion? On here? Never! This thread was of great interest to me and I appreciate the fact that while this is primarily a board for Top 40 music discussion, nobody seems to mind too much if the occasional low or non-charting release takes centre stage. |
