my commercial 45 for the diana ross song 'remember me'
issued as motown 1176 states the run time on the label as 3:09 but actually runs 3:19 and is much slower than the 3:16 mono version from the motown singles box set.....pat where did you get the 3:16 45 run time info from...thanks brian for providing the source material for my review....this new 45 run time info should be added to the db... |

Nice catch, Ed! I just pulled my commercial 45, and the timing particulars I
have jotted down on the Post-It Note I attach to the front of each of my 45s says "listed (3:09); actual (3:20)"; so our times are within one second of each other. My 45's deadwax info is a machine-stamped "Z4KM-5100-1 C", followed by a long, handwritten, totally-crossed-out "A1-S1-K-T2- 848M01", then the date "12-2-70". I have not yet located a promo 45 for "Remember Me". Anyone else happen to own one? |

Jim, I came very close to owning one in '71: the MD at the local oldies station would give me extra promo copies of their currents whenever I'd stop by while he was on the air. One of those 45s was "Remember Me," which I held just long enough for both of us to realize it was on red vinyl. He quickly snatched it back, retreated to his office and then returned with a new stock copy in title sleeve as the "consolation prize." ;) (The red vinyl DJ 45 had come in a factory sleeve.)
The actual time of that stock copy is (3:19.5). It's of Atrocious Record Pressing heritage, mastered by RCA (deadwax is machine-stamped "Z4KM - 5100 - 1 B", then hand-lettered "A1-S1-K-T2-848M01".) Aside from the italicized ARP logo, the only other marking is an underlined "X". |

John, time and time again, you provide such great all-around info to us.
Thanks! And I LOVE that story about the "near-score" of that red promo 45, and your stock copy consolation prize! :) I happened to see that red promo copy on Discogs last night, label scan and all. Quite often, deadwax details are also provided on there. They were in this case. It's the same as my stock copy, except for the crossout of the handwritten info, and does also notes your "ARP". I had to actually research that ARP acronym. Since you're a funny guy, I know it *couldn't* really stand for "Atrocious Record Pressing". As you no doubt knew already, it was called "American Record Pressing" from Owosso, MI. But, as you've indicated, that plant was universally considered to produce the lowest quality 45s anywhere, hence your moniker. |

Did I say Atrocious Record Pressing? Whoops, my mistake. The actual name was Asphalt Recycling Processors. ;)
My biggest basket case of an ARP 45 wasn't even on Motown; it was their pressing of the New Colony Six's "Roll On" on Sunlight, also from '71. Not even Rhino could clean that one up satisfactorily. Perhaps this is how ARP's price list ranked their vinyl grade options (in descending order of quality) : Bad Really bad Really, really bad Atrocious Asphalt Can't Tell Whether It Fades Or Ends Cold Stylus sharpener ;) |
