Tonight, on "Before They Were Top 40"...

Teena Marie's "Square Biz" did better on both the R&B and the dance charts than the pop charts, but she did manage to make it to #50 on the Hot 100 singles Billboard chart.

I have no vinyl sources, and therefore cannot be certain of the original release lengths.

The LP version seems to have run 6:30 - 6:45, and the single edit (which I have not directly compared, but sounds like the same mix as the LP) is labeled on the 45 as running 3:30, but versions on CD seem to run about 3:35 - 3:45.

The digital copy I have, when the silence is removed, makes it almost to 3:40 (3:39.805).

Can anyone confirm this length is close to correct for the 7" / single / promo version?

Don't have the answer to your question Gene, but I want you to be aware that back when the song was an R&B & club smash there were two distinct mixes released; one drenched in reverb & one much drier.

AndrewChouffi, thanks for that info; I may have to listen closer to the copies I have. (The version I am calling the "single" version seems pretty dry to me.)

cmmmbase, that absolutely helps! Thank you for the info.

Really! Where can one find this wetter
mix?

To 'The Hits Man':

Not sure of all the places where the wetter mix is found, but I do know it's on my promo copy of the parent vinyl album 'It Must Be Magic' and the promo 12" [PR-82] of "Square Biz".

The commercial 12" [M 35000V1] I received had the drier mix.

Gene, I just pulled my stock and promo 45 copies of "Square Biz". Confirmed
as Gordy 7202, both have listed times of (3:30), but your actual (3:39.805)
timing seems spot on, as neither one quite got to (3:40) for me, but that's
certainly what it rounds off to, so Chuck's time is correct, too.

My stock and promo 45 deadwax info is also identical: "G7 202 F-A 66349
RE1 15B". So, unless there was a 2nd 45 pressing (which is certainly possible,
given the "RE1" deadwax info found on my 45s), it appears that the wetter
mix Andy is referring to might be limited to the song's LP and 12" releases.

In 1981, I has the cassette version of the album, and the
mix was wetter, as was the rest of the album. The LP
copy I bought two months later was drier. But this is
not what now has my interest.

That cassette copy had a different mix of the song
"Revolution" that I have not found anywhere else. This
first mix has an extra keyboard part during the
instrumental part after the vocal intro. This
instrumental part was also shorter than the other
versions.

I know this gets away from the topic of top 40 singles,
but I just wonder if this version ever made it to any
other commercial releases.
