I recently found the 2001 single-disc version of Michael Jackson's HIStory Vol. 1. I think it's the same as one of the discs from the original 1995 release, but not 100% sure.
Overall, the sound is surprisingly good on this disc. I was expecting a brickwalled mess, but it adds only a modest amount of compression/limiting. I can live with that, because it clearly uses better source tapes than the original CD releases of Off The Wall and Thriller. One problem, though: I hear clipping in the right channel on a lot of drumbeats on "Rock With You". The first one is on the bass drum hit at the 4.4 second mark. Zoom way in, and you can a little rounding of the peaks of the waveform (that's the compression/limiting), and some digital ugliness on one of the peaks in the right channel. Does this show up on all copies of HIStory Vol. 1? |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
