For the search engine, this is for "Get The Funk Out Ma Face", a top 30 single for the Brothers Johnson in 1976.
The LP version runs 2:29. It sounds fine on A&M's Greatest Hits (1996). The 45 runs 5:59, and is a different mix than the LP version. Listen for the tambourine, which shows up quickly in the 45 version and sticks around for the whole song - there's no tambourine in the LP version. I like the 45 version on Rhino's In Yo' Face Vol. 3 (1993). It's also on A&M's Classics Vol. 11 (1987), but I don't have that disc to compare. I'm just posting this because the database currently lists the "LP length". It's not just a length difference, so I'd recommend an "LP version" instead. I assume that the promo 45 2:29 version is the same as the LP version? Can't confirm. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I don't ever recall this song getting any airplay on my
local stations. Those stations that did, did everyone opt to play the 2:27 version vs. the 5:59 45 version? |

I only heard the song when it was played on AT40 and they played the promo 45 mix/version. Don't think it was a big Miami/Ft. Lauderdale pop radio hit (which is what I was listening to back in '76).

I only heard the 2:27 album/short promo 45 version on the air in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy market.
Let's face it, the 2:27 version is a higher-fidelity, crisper mix anyhow. However, in my area the bars/nightspots played the long mix, because it was also on the 12-inch single (reported to me, I was under drinking age). Andy |
