Just reviewed the new Jerry Lee Lewis cd titled "The Definitive Collection" on Hip-O and the liner notes say that the version on this cd is the 45 version of Drinking Wine Spo-Dee O'Dee but it only runs (2:13) while Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual says the 45 runs (3:37). Does anyone have this 45 that can confirm the actual running time of this 45?

Jim reports his commercial 45 copy of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Drinking Wine Spo-Dee O'Dee" has an actual run time of 3:35. (The printed record label time is 3:37.) Currently, database CDs containing the correct hit version of the song run 3:36-3:41.

Todd, just thought I'd add that my 1973 commercial 45 copy for this song is on vinyl, which I recall was very unusual for Mercury to issue during this "all red label" era; I believe all of my other 72-73-74s are on styrene. Perhaps this was farmed out to one of their "secondary" pressing plants, which may explain the :02 time second difference between Mr. Whitburn's copy (which Paul Haney kindly provided the info for earlier) and mine. (My deadwax info is "2-50029-CS-5 (written over a "4")-MS".)

Was this song during a time period that might be considered a resurgence in Jerry Lee Lewis' career? He also had recorded "Chantilly Lace" in 1972.

Not to mention a rockabilly version of "Me & Bobby McGee". |

Hi Pat,
Are you sure the Hip-O release has the hit *take* of "Drinkin' Wine..." with all the British based session players? The reason why I ask is because Jerry Lee released that song a few times (in a few different versions) in his career and it might be *a* 45 version but not the hit 45 version. Andy |

The version on Hip-O 314546736 "Best Of: 20th Century Masters" is the hit 45 version.
