Did radio really play Part 1 and Part 2 or was only part 1 played which times in at 2:59? It is listed in the Pop Annual as running 5:52 and I even confirmed that on youtube but can anyone tell me if they know or if they are old enough if they remember hearing both parts together?
It would seem odd that a 5:52 single would be issued in 1955 considering that very few songs went past 3 minutes and 13 seconds that year. Any clarity would help. |

That song was one of my Mom's favorites. She had the 45
and told me that the local radio station always played both parts. Joel Whitburn also told me that he always heard the whole thing on the radio at the time. It's really a story song and you have to hear both parts to get the full story. Same goes for "songs" like The Flying Saucer by Buchanan & Goodman. |

Paul,
Thanks for the insight. Based on what you say I have replaced the part 1 in my collection with the 5:52 parts 1 and 2. Because I was not alive in that era its hard to know for sure which is why I asked. I appreciate you asking Joel about it as I was not sure anyone on this board would even be able to answer it in the first place. I strive for accuracy in my collection. I will also note the Flying Saucer is parts 1 and 2 as well when I get to it. You can understand my skepticism seeing a 5:52 running time on a 1955 45 version. Thanks again. |

Paul,
Is the 5:35 also the 45 version for the Honky Tonk (Parts 1 and 2) by Bill Doggett? I seem to have a version that times in at 3:05 that contains both parts, is that a radio edit? |

Funny you should mention "Honky Tonk" as Joel & I were discussing that one a couple of weeks ago. Joel remembers the radio stations playing both Parts 1 & 2 together at the time. A good rule of thumb is to go by what's listed in the Pop Annual. Joel made a point to handle those Part 1 & 2 hits properly. BTW, I always thought the (3:05) version was just Part 1? Paul,
Just an FYI, I was able to find both Parts 1 and 2 together and Parts 1 and 2 separate in lossless from CD. So I included it both ways. I did however want to note that there was a promo for the Parts 1 and 2 together on discogs in Ultra High Fidelity: https://www.discogs.com/Billy-Vaughn-And-His-Orchestra-The-S hifting-Whispering-Sands/release/3022903 Edited by PopArchivist |
