OT Indeep - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Indeep only took Last Night A DJ Saved My Life to #101 in 1983 but over the years became a huge hit around the world and was the only hit for both Indeep and their record label, Sound of New York / Becket Records.

The LP version and the 12" version appear to be identical {EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST BEAT AS JASON POINTS OUT BELOW}, 5:40 in length according to the label. The 12" also contains a 3 minute acapella version.

The 7" single and the radio promo appear to be identical to each other, with a listed length of 4:16.

I have two sources for the 7" single: Back To The 80's Volume 2, and Culture Dance Vol 3. BTT80s sounds like it might be from vinyl. However, they stay perfectly in sync, suggesting the same original digital master. Both fade earlier than 4:16, one at 4:10 and the other at 4:11.

I then have "Now That's What I Call 80s Dance" (a generally terrible source for anything) which has a 4:28 length version. After that comes "The Disco Years, Volume 2; On The Beat" with a 4:45 version.

Finally, the LP / 12" version appears on Dance Classics Vol. 13 and Grand 12 Inches Vol. 1. The left and right channels appear to be reversed from each other; I don't know which is correct but the Grand 12 Inches collection is generally excellent.

All six versions I have are the identical mix, and all under 5:40 are early fades or edits and early fades (TWIC80sD has a slight edit near the end).

My only question is how long the original 45 really was. I'm suspecting the audio will fade to silence right before 4:14. If someone could check the length or get me access to a recording of the original 45 all the way out to the end groove, we could know exactly how long the single version should be.

Correct me if I'm wrong, this ~ 4:42 version is just a
later faded version of the 45 version then.

Jason, you're correct. You likely have the 45 version faded later (or the LP version faded earlier). :-)

Bill, that's a good question! Haven't heard that one before.

Oh my goodness... Jason, you're right. Appears I was just moving too fast on this one.

I even checked to see if you could grab the downbeat with the cymbal crash from elsewhere in the 12" but I couldn't find a suitable clip.

Based on this, the 7" CANNOT be created from the 12".

Very odd; my mixes are all over the place as far as that first cymbal crash:

Back To The 80s Vol. 2 (4:10) -- no crash
Culture Dance Vol. 3 (4:11) -- no crash
Now That's What I Call 80s Dance (4:28) -- crash
The Disco Years Vol. 2 On The Beat (4:45) -- crash
Dance Classics Vol. 13 (5:39) -- no crash
Grand 12 Inches Vol. 1 (5:40) -- no crash

That would make the first two early fades of the 12", while the 4:28 & 4:45 are extended versions of the single mix? (There's an edit on the "NTWIC80sD" track.)

I'd recommend grabbing the opening four beats from The Disco Years and tacking it on to the Grand 12 Inches version to recreate the 7" single.
