O/T Upgrading from iTunes to Apple Music

   Upgrading from iTunes to Apple Music is off topic but I figure if any music 

fans have done this, someone here has. I'm thinking of upgrading my mac 

OS from Mojave to Catalina (10.14 to 10.15), which is the most current 

version I can have on my iMac. The thing holding me back is I'll HAVE to 

upgrade from iTunes to Apple Music. (The OS I currently have is the last 

version that's compatible with iTunes). For anyone who's used iTunes and 

made playlists on it - and also for people who have personally remastered 

songs before putting them on their iTunes library:

*Will all my playlists appear and work on Apple Music (and can I still 

add/delete songs to them)?

* Will Apple replace MY remastered mp3s (e.g. Greatest Love of All by 

Whitney) with THEIR version in Apple Music - because they detect by title 

and artist it's supposedly the same recording? If so, is their a Preference 

Setting preventing apple from replacing my mp3s with theirs?)

*Can I still re-sequence a playlist by selecting one of the parameters on top 

(e.g. ordering them by "Last Played" or "Most Plays", or "Date Added", etc.)

*Any other warnings I should know about?

*Will iTunes remains on my iPhone?

*Other than the fact that the basic page will have a different look, how else 

does apple music differ from iTunes (in terms of having lived in an iTunes 

world for 15 or so years)?

I remember when I tried the free 30-day trial of Apple Music when they first 

put it on the market it totally messed up my system and I had to delete 

Apple Music from my system. Can't recall the specifics now. 

I've called Apple and they haven't been of much help

	The MacOS changed the name from iTunes to just "Music." You can still play your own files and playlists just like before, but I do not know what the process is of moving them from iTunes to Music. Your playlists are embedded within a large iTunes Library file, I think, but I might be wrong about that. Within the Music app, you can play all the music that is on your hard drive, and you can also use Apple Music's streaming subscription.

	I made the move from iTunes to Music (what a dumb name for an app....the problem comes when you need to search the web for info, which on occasion I have had to do due to bugs - using the app name and even adding "Apple" doesn't really help much of the time...anyway, I digress). When I made the move, I was as concerned as you. But having done it a few years ago, I don't recall any of the specifics in the move - I just know that everything came over just fine. My playlists came over (VERY important to me as I have over 1,000), Apple did not replace any of my songs, yes you can re-sequence playlists, doing this on your mac doesn't affect your iPhone. I do know that I have the "Apple Music" and "iTunes Store" (and the other two there) boxes unchecked in Preferences->General. I also stay signed out, as I use Music only to listen to my own library of songs - I have zero interest on what Apple can offer me or what they think sounds better than what I have. I would suggest googling "moving from iTunes to Apple Music" and selecting one that seems to be the best result - I'm sure that's what I did to ensure everything went smoothly. Hope that helps....

	Oh my goodness, EdisonLite - I could have written your post word for word (with the exception that my Mac is on Monterey OS) ALL of your concerns have held me back from anything Apple Music for 5 years now despite societal pressure. My personal song edits, playlists, personalized single cover art and other metadata are far too precious to blindly migrate 10,000 songs to a streaming app. And as much as I love Apple's stuff, I was ALSO seriously burned by experiences with iTunes Match overwriting my songs with their generic versions. A nightmare that took months to rectify. Problem is - it's only a matter of time before new iTunes downloads are no longer offered to the public - as the world goes 100% towards streaming. If anyone else can double confirm our fears are groundless - please shout out!

	If problems should happen during the process (e.g. losing playlists or something else), wouldn't we be able to keep the iTunes app on our phone (with all 1000 playlists) while also adding the Apple "Music" app? At least all our playlists would be preserved there, although we just couldn't add/delete songs or playlists. And maybe we could play from either app?? Then again, in the bottom right corner of our iPhones there's just one icon for music (red with white 2 music notes), and I assume it will default to the new (Apple) "Music" app, and there'd be no way to access iTunes. Would that be the case?

	My phone is running iOS 15, as I haven't yet updated to 16. Nevertheless, the iPhone still has the following apps: Music (red with white music note), which is where you can play songs and playlists that are copied to the hard drive of your phone (under the Library tab). This same app is used to stream Apple Music (subscription service). iTunes Store (purple with a white star), which is where you can buy music downloads. When talking about your desktop or laptop Mac, the iTunes Store has been rolled into the Music app. I'm still running 10.15 (Catalina) on my MacBook Pro, because it plays well with my DJ software. Apple has since released MacOS 11, 12 & 13. Catalina no longer calls the app iTunes (it's called Music), but it has the familiar white circle with a music note icon. Within this app, I can play files from my hard drive, make playlists, download songs from the iTunes Store, and stream Apple Music (subscription service). It's basically an all-in-one app for music, whether you're playing your own playlists/files, streaming, or making purchases.

	Thanks for the info everyone has provided so far. I realized I wouldn't be able to have both (Apple) Music (app) & iTunes (music, not the store) on my phone. (A) There's only one icon for my music library (the red box with white letters) (B) Even if there were separate icons, I'd probably have to have 2 of every mp3! And I don't have enough room for that as I only have about 16 GB free on my iPhone.
