"(What) in the Name of Love" - Naked Eyes

And..... this little factoid has NOTHING to do with this
thread, but before Naked Eyes had that name they were a
new-wave group called "New Musik" and had a minor AOR
hit, but major *new wave* hit in 1980 called "Straight
Lines". In the U.S. they were on Epic records.
"Straight Lines" was played a LOT on our new wave
station (WLIR) in NY.

Alas, on Youtube they only have the LP version which was
the 12" extended version. The single ran about 4
minutes.

The funny thing is, it took me years to find the song
because their band name was unclear...if the DJ said
"new musik" you just assume it's new, but no band name!
I finally found it on one of those Epic new wave
samplers...they were 10" mini LPs with 2 tracks on each
side.

New Musik was really catchy, but one clarification: the band featured Tony Mansfield, who would later produce the Naked Eyes albums, but didn't feature Pete Byrne or Rob Fisher from Naked Eyes. New Musik was outstanding, and most definitely worth checking out.

If you're going to sail down the rabbit hole, the two guys in Naked Eyes were in a band called Neon, along with Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, who would later form Tears For Fears! Neon released two 45s and nothing else, but their most interesting recording was an unreleased demo called "Victims Of Fact". Amazingly, my radio show ended up as a primary source on YouTube for the song - someone posted a clip, with a very long talkup, here.

After Neon broke up in 1981, Pete and Rob formed Naked Eyes, and Roland and Curt formed a group called Graduate. Graduate released one worthwhile album in 1980. The Graduate song "Elvis Should Play Ska" grazed the bottom of the UK charts. Another Graduate song "Julie Julie" borrows quite a bit from "Star" by Stealers Wheel.

After the Graduate album, Roland and Curt reunited with Manny Elias, the drummer from Neon, to form Tears For Fears.

Footnote: After Naked Eyes, Rob Fisher would work with Simon Climie as the group Climie Fisher, who put out two worthwhile pop albums in the late '80s.
