pat

any reason whitney houston's version of "the star spangled baner" isn't in the db...it hit number 20 on the billboard charts and it must have been on whatever charts you use to come up with this db of yours, so the question is.....didn't it make whatever other charts you use....or is this an oversight??

Ed - you are also forgetting that it reached #6 in 2001 in the wake of 9/11

This song didn't chart at all on the Cash Box charts.

the only problem with your statement, Pat, is that Cashbox wasn't being published in 2001, when the track had even greater popularity in the wake of 9/11.

It also never made it to Radio and Records Top 40, though it did make it to #19 on ARC's Weekly Top 40 chart.

True, it was much more of a sales than an airplay hit (in Billboard #1 sales vs #45 airplay - again in 2001)

That is REALLY WEIRD that it didn't chart in Cash Box at all. It hit #20 on the Hot 100 in the March 30, 1991 issue. (Though its first chart run is strangely missing from Billboard.biz's online database.)

All I can speculate is that Cash Box was much more heavily airplay-based than Billboard by that time (which I've long suspected), or that they discounted it as a charity single (which it was).

However, the song did re-enter a decade later, peaking in the top ten on the Hot 100, so it should be in the database.

Interesting. Though, you know, the ARC chart is just a fan-made chart... It was never a published chart back in the day.

Oh, actually, it's not missing... I looked it up by peak date, and since it peaked higher on its second chart run than it's first, it didn't display the 1991 chart peak at all.

I entered the comment about this song not charting on the Cash Box charts in 1991 before I caught the comment by cmmmbase that Cash Box was not being printed in 2001 which is correct. I now recall looking for this song to show up on the R&R charts in 2001 after it entered the Billboard charts but as pointed out above it did not chart on the R&R chart and since I did not hear any radio airplay, I elected not to enter this song in the database even though it did eventually reach #6 in Billboard based on sales alone. This is a tough one to call but if there is a strong sentiment that it should be entered in the database I would oblige. In recent chart history there are many examples of primarily c&w songs that have charted from the number 30 to 40 positions on the Billobard Hot 100 that I have not included in the database for the same reason I did not include "The Star Spangled Banner" - they just didn't get any pop airplay.
