In regards to Radio & Records, I seem to recall the Star Spangled Banner being considered a gold title during its 2001 run. At the time I was researching mainstream top 40 radio for mediabase 24/7, whose data R&R was basing their chart on. That's one reason why it didn't chart. Trust me, in the weeks after 9/11 it was played (though not as much as Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA) on CHR

Well, the name of the website is "Top 40 Music on CD," so since Star Spangled Banner and the other country singles you mention were Top 40 on the Hot 100, it seems they ought to be in the database.

I do think for consistency's sake that, after Cash Box's demise, you should include the entire Top Forty of the Hot 100 in the database.

(Then, I also think you should add "Into the Groove," since it's been pretty well proven that it would have charted in the top ten if Billboard hadn't made the bad decision to disqualify it. But what do I know?)

It is included in the database, as well as the 10th (and final) edition of the book, but only under the year 2001.

I listened to this song on Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits cd again today and it sounds to me like it is a case of very poor stereo separation but I am certainly open to input from other members of this board as to whether they would call it mono.

This was a lip-synced performance, so the single is an "open air" recording of a studio track with the live audience interaction from Tampa Stadium at Super Bowl XXV. I'm assuming the single matches whatever audio was transmitted over television airwaves in early 1991.

It's a shame that they never released the original studio recording (like the b-side "America The Beautiful") but they probably didn't want to ruin the illusion of this having been a live performance.

I've never heard this in stereo either.

I too heard right after that game that it was prerecorded to be sure it was perfect on the air. But really any fist level engineer could have added the applause to the stereo recording and released it that way.

I remember when I received the commercial CD single in '91 it was mildly rechanneled. Blecch.
