The actual commercial 45 run time of Donna Summer's "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'" is 3:57, not 3:55 as stated on the record label. (These timings are courtesy of abagon.) This is a significant discovery because the song's lone database CD appearance runs 4:17. This suggests we're probably looking at a version or length difference between the 45 and LP. I will try to obtain a 45 dub for further analysis, but until then does anyone have some insight into the time difference?

Update... Thanks to some help from a commercial 45 dub edtop40 sent me of "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'", we can conclude there is a version difference between the 45 and LP. To obtain the 45, it sounds like there are two edits during the intro, and the song is faded out slightly earlier than the LP. I have not yet attempted to edit the LP version on CD to match the 45, but it appears it can be done.
In summary, the lone database CD appearance of "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'" should have the comment: (LP version). |

I just recreated this edit, and you are correct, Todd. 2 edits on the intro and an early fade.

Does anybody have the edit points to take the LP version to the 45 version?

The 45 edit has appeared on CD on two import releases. One is the remastered & expanded The Wanderer CD. The other is the double disc compilation Hits, Singles & More. Both can be purchased new for very little money via Amazon US.

(Unrelated: My ancient copy of Cool Edit Pro kept crashing under Windows 10, so I'm forcing myself to use Audacity. So far, so good. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to mimic the weird technique I use in Cool Edit Pro to get extremely precise BPM measurements. Mark described a trick he uses to locate edit points, and it works superbly in Audacity: line up the tracks in time, pan one track hard left and the other track hard right, and listen in headphones. Any edit point will jump out at you. Well done, Mark!)
For "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'", there are indeed two edit points and an early fade. Here are editing instructions, using the LP version from the Geffen The Wanderer CD as the source. Segment 1 Is seven sixteenth notes long; ends at what would be the first note on the bass Extends from 0:00.0 to 0:01.8 of the LP version and the 45 edit Remove the 16 beats from 0:01.8 to 0:08.8 of the LP version. Segment 2 Begins on a downbeat, ends on a downbeat 16 beats long Extends from 0:01.8 to 0:08.8 of 45 edit Extends from 0:08.8 to 0:15.8 of LP version Remove the 16 beats from 0:15.8 to 0:22.9 of the LP version. Segment 3 Begins on a downbeat, ends on a downbeat Extends from 0:08.8 to 3:58.6 of 45 edit Extends from 0:22.9 to 4:12.8 of LP version Fade 24 beats long Extends from 3:47.8 to 3:58.6 of 45 edit Extends from 4:02.0 to 4:12.8 of LP version |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
