Does anyone know if Bobby Darin's "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" was ever released on a parent LP, or was it a 45-only release? I'm trying to determine when the stereo mix, which differs considerably from the mono 45 mix, made its first appearance.

Also, on a side note... The song title is incorrectly listed as "Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home" on the Bobby Darin The Hit Singles Collection CD (Elektra/Atco/Rhino 78326).

I believe this track made its first stereo appearance on the 1961 compilation
LP "The Bobby Darin Story", as did several of his hits. This would seem to be
why many of his songs in stereo sound quite different from the mono, i.e.,
that they were first mixed to stereo for this 1961 LP.

Atlantic/Atco may have released a different take for the stereo version on purpose. I believe at the session you'd record one take for mono mixing and another take for stereo mixing. Either that, or they made lots of mistakes when they went to mix stereo versions, because other Bobby Darin hits are different takes on the stereo version, as are hits by the Coasters and Drifters. There might have been unusual union rules as stereo was being introduced, I don't know.

Did "Splish Splash" and "Mack the Knife" also both make their stereo mix debuts on the Bobby Darin Story vinyl LP?

To Todd:

Not sure right now about "Splish Splash", but "Mack The Knife" first appeared in stereo on the 'That's All' LP.
