According to Bill Inglot, the mix of this
song on the 45 is unique to the 45. I don't know how it differs from the lp mix or where it can be found in the digital world. |

I respect Bill's work, but I think he's mistaken about this one. Is it possible he's thinking about some other FM single (some of which WERE different mixes)? |

Bill's the best!
But I can see how he mistook "Go Your Own Way" for another single; I had to look it up myself. The 1975-1977 singles all bleed together in a giant mass of well-crafted pop. The 45s of "Over My Head", "Rhiannon", and "Say You Love Me" are different from the LP versions. The other 45s from that time frame all match the LP versions. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Rumours seems to have a number of mixes that were, at one time or another, considered to be the final mix. Some of these "alternate"
final mixes didn't see the light of day until the release of the 25 YEARS: THE CHAIN box set. There are also some alternate edits to several tracks on the album that will vary depending on which pressing of the album you got (examples being the repeated guitar solo at the end of "Second Hand News", an added instrumental measure in "Never Going Back Again", the fade in and fade out of "Gold Dust Woman"). The original (first) CD pressing of Rumours contains, for better or worse, a FLAT transfer of the master (or a copy of the master). At some point soon following this initial pressing, (pre-2000s remaster) the CD was re-done with a much brighter EQ and digital reverb added. The Rumours tracks on the late '80s Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits release seem to be taken from this CD master. The 2004 remaster of Rumours is, for my money, the best bang for the buck. Maybe it is a little loud at times but it has the BEST EQ of any CD version and it has the tracks in unedited form (unlike the original CD) and does not have any added digital reverb. Comparing the very first CD and the 2004 is a night and day difference. Finally a CD of Rumours that doesn't sound like crap. I don't think there is any variation on "Go Your Own Way" re: the LP vs. the 45. Bill might have been thinking of songs off of the white Fleetwood Mac album that preceded Rumours which does have unique 45 mixes. |

Just out of curiosity, and I don't intend to go down a whole different rabbit hole here, but has there ever been an "extended" version of "Go Your Own Way" released anywhere? The song is a favorite of mine (and I can never resist the urge to crank the volume WAY up to do "air guitar", "air drums", and furious head-banging during the jam session toward the end LOL), yet I've always thought the song fades out way too abruptly... Even after decades of hearing "Go Your Own Way" many hundreds of times, I'm always left thinking there should be something more at the end!

This is new information for me. I was unaware that there are reverb differences on some of these songs. If that's the case, the database will need to be updated. |

The added reverb featured on the pre-2004 post-first issue CD of Rumours is most noticeable on the guitar introduction of "Go Your Own Way" and the snare hits on
"Dreams". As I said before, the master for this CD version of Rumours was the source for all the Rumours cuts on the 1988 Greatest Hits album. |

According to Steve Hoffman, Inglot is correct: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/fleetwood-mac-rumours -45-33-1-3-rpm-hoffman-gray-vinyl-mastering-equalization-not es.247970/page-2#post-6445352 "There are two mixes of GO YOUR OWN WAY, existing on three reels. The original 30 ips mix with SILVER SPRINGS done for the 45 RPM release and the two first generation simul mixes at 15 ips Dolby A for the album sets. All three tapes sound alike for the most part, the 30 perhaps a little leaner with less body and the 15 with more midrange magic and bass." He explains the "two first generation simul mixes" for the album further here: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/fleetwood-mac-rumours -new-wb-vinyl-gold-dust-woman-mix-variation-question.116245/ page-2#post-2628017 "They mixed to TWO tape machines going at once, both sets of masters (both first generation) have different things done to them in the way of edits, little alt. mix pieces, etc. When one set started to wear out they started swapping songs from the fresh reels. It's so jumbled up now that it's quite a challenge." |

While I'm sure Steve is correct, I'll have to pull my 45 and 1977 LP pressing of Rumours to hear if there is any noticeable difference. As for the CDs mentioned by LunarLaugh, that sounds like a big can of worms to sort out. I'm not sure which pressing(s) of Rumours I have on CD. |
