Hope this reference helps those seeking out Pat Benatar's single versions on compact disc. Her discography is a mess with low budget compilations, but by buying 2 or 3 of the official ones you can gather all of the correct mixes in superb sound quality. :)
Best Shots (UK, 1987) This collects all of her UK singles up to 1986. - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Remix) - Love Is A Battlefield (Single Version) - We Belong (Single Version) with speed glitch on intro. The tape starts slow and within 2 seconds slips into the correct speed. - We Live For Love (aka We Live For Love '85...from the We Belong 12" single) - Sex As A Weapon (Album Version) - Invincible (Single Edit) - Shadows Of The Night (Single Fade) - Heartbreaker (Album Version) - Fire And Ice (Album Version) - Treat Me Right (Album Version) - If You Think You Know How To Love Me (Single Edit) - You Better Run (Album Version) Best Shots (US Version, 1989) - Love Is A Battlefield (Album Version) - Promises In The Dark (Album Version) - One Love (Album Version) - All Fired Up (Album Version) - We Live For Love (Remixed Album Version) - Hell Is For Children (Album Version) - Shadows Of The Night (Album Version) - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Album Version) - We Belong (Album Version) - Invincible (Album Version) - Fire And Ice (Album Version) - Heartbreaker (Album Version) - Suffer The Little Children/Hell Is For Children (Live 1988) CD Bonus Track - Painted Desert (Album Version) CD Bonus Track - Outlaw Blues (1989 Re-recorded version of song originally included on 1984's Tropico) CD Bonus Track Greatest Hits (Worldwide, 2005) - Heartbreaker (Album Version) - We Live For Love (Remixed ALBUM Version, the correct single version is this mix faded early) - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Album Version) - Hell Is For Children (Album Version) - Treat Me Right (Single Version) debut on CD, remixed and faded earlier than the album version - You Better Run (Album Version) - Fire And Ice (Album Version) - Promises In The Dark (Album Version) - Precious Time (Album Version) - Shadows Of The Night (Single Fade) - Little Too Late (Single Edit) - Looking For A Stranger (Album Version) - Love Is A Battlefield (Single Version) - We Belong (ALBUM version, not the single mix!...) - Ooh Ooh Song (Album Version) - Invincible (Single Edit) - Sex As A Weapon (Album Version) - Le Bel Age (Single Fade) - All Fired Up (Single Version) - One Love (Single Edit) All Fired Up: The Very Best Of Pat Benatar (US, 1994) CD1 - I Need A Lover (Album Version) - If You Think You Know How To Love Me (Single Edit) - Heartbreaker (Album Version) - We Live For Love (Rock Radio Mix / Single Version) - finally, the PROPER single version on CD - You Better Run (mono version) - this was clearly a mastering oversight. The Album Version is the single version. - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Album Version) - Treat Me Right (Album Version with Fade) - the length of the single version, but the wrong mix. See 2005's Greatest Hits for the correct mix. - Hell Is For Children (Album Version) - Fire And Ice (Album Version) - Promises In The Dark (Album Version) - Shadows Of The Night (Single Fade) - Little Too Late (Single Edit) - Looking For A Stranger (Album Version) - Anxiety (Get Nervous) (Album Version) - Love Is A Battlefield (Single Version) - Lipstick Lies (Album Version) CD2 - We Belong (Single Version) NO GLITCH! - Ooh Ooh Song (Album Version) - Temporary Heroes (Single Version) - Invincible (Single Edit) - Sex As A Weapon (Album Version) - Le Bel Age (Single Fade) - All Fired Up (Single Version) - Don't Walk Away (Single Fade) - Let's Stay Together (Single Version) - One Love (Single Edit) - True Love (Album Version) - Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss (Album Version) - So Long (Album Version) - Everybody Lay Down (Single Edit) - Somebody's Baby (Single Edit) - Crazy (Single Edit) - Everytime I Fall Back (Single Version / Remix Edit) |

To sum things up, you need Greatest Hits, All Fired Up: The Very Best Of Pat Benatar and Best Shots (International, 1987) to collect all of her top 40 songs in their correct single versions.
All of her Top 40 entries are featured on the 2005 single disc release Greatest Hits, but they neglected to use the proper single mixes for "We Live For Love", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "We Belong". For "We Live For Love" and "We Belong" you will need the 1994 double CD All Fired Up: The Very Best Of Pat Benatar. For "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" you will need the international pressing of Best Shots. Though all of the Top 40 singles are featured on All Fired Up: The Very Best Of Pat Benatar, Greatest Hits is still a necessary purchase as it is the only CD release of the Treat Me Right single mix. Best Shots (US) is unnecessary if you are trying to obtain the US Top 40 mixes, but it does include (as CD bonus tracks) a live recording of Suffer The Little Children/Hell Is For Children and a new recording of Outlaw Blues otherwise only released on a promotional One Love CD Single. You'll also need the UK CD Best Shots, unless you don't care about having the 45 version of "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." :) The "Rock Guitar" mix IS the US 45 version. Edited by aaronk |

Oh my god, you're right. It's been years since I spun the 45. Thank you so much for catching that!
Let me edit my list. Everything else I assure you is correct. :) Edited by Underground Dub |

Yes, the album and single versions of Sex As A Weapon are identical and run 4:15.
Another note: "Ooh Ooh Song" has an edit, only on promo and non-US singles (7" and 12"), and "Promises In The Dark" has a promo-only edit (also limited to vinyl). |

Regarding "We Live for Love" and "Treat Me Right", am I understanding correctly that the respective commercial 45 releases for these singles are different mixes than their LP counterparts and not simply early fades? If so, then it looks like Pat will need to make some corrections to the database because all CD appearances for these two songs are currently distinguished by "45 length" and "LP length".

I found the 45 mix of "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" on a 5-CD Australian box set called Pop Complete, EMI 7243 4 98604 2 1, released 1999.
The sound on some tracks is a little flat, as if they weren't using first-generation tapes, but none of the tracks are maximized (a.k.a. compressed/squashed - mastered too loud resulting in clipping). The track selection is outstanding - a nice collection of US hits, UK hits, and some Australian hits I've never heard before. Highly recommended. Also put out by EMI Australia in the 5-CD brick format: Seventies Complete (EMI 7243 8 14835 2 7, rel 1997) Seventies Complete Vol. 2 (EMI 7243 4 94552 2 1, rel 1999) Eighties Complete (EMI 7243 8 56761 2 3, rel 1997) - this one has the bells-only intro to Naked Eyes's "Always Something There To Remind Me"! Eighties Complete Vol. 2 (EMI 7243 4 99334 2 2, rel 1999) There may be more in the series. |

another item.....the song "shadows of the night" actually runs 3:43 on the 45 while the 45 versions on cd run 3:40.....can the true 45 version be re-created by lengthing the fade out from the cd/lp version??....this slight oversight may be because the 45 label states a run time of 3:40.....maybe that's why the people who put the cd compilations together faded it to 3:40 and NOT the proper 3:43 length...they never listened to the 45 th verify it's true length...
