Naked Eyes - Always Something There (12")

   Once upon a time, I came across a Naked Eyes compilation CD that had the (6:15) 12" mix of "Always Something There To Remind Me."  I should've picked it up when I saw it, but you know how that goes...

Anyhow, if anyone has any info on what this compilation is called, I'd greatly appreciate it.  I believe it is an import, and it is NOT Everything And More, as I have that disc.  This one could possibly be a Canadian release, but I can't say for sure.

	On allaccess, they list it on a cd called Hardest Hits Vol. 2, but this all by various artists. They said you could buy it for $27.97.

	Hey aaron, That particular 12" version is not on the CD called "Promises, Promises: The Very Best of Naked Eyes" either. But I do have the 6:15 mix on the SPG records compilation "Hardest Hits 2", which is all extended mixes of 80s new wave goodies.

	Thanks Gary & budaniel. How is the sound quality on the SPG compilation? I was leary about buying it, because a few of their other 80's-era extended mix compilations have several vinyl transfers. I do know that there is another Naked Eyes CD that has the extended mix on it. It's not listed on allmusic.com, but I've seen it before on ebay.

	WAIT A MINUTE! I just found a listing for it. It's actually a CD single b/w Jocelyn Brown "I Wish You Would." It has a red cover and says "12 Inch Classics On CD." That's the one I was thinking of...now, just to find it :)

	Does the 12" version have the "no drums" intro that was used in the video? I have been trying to locate a version with this alternate intro for years.

	No, both 12" mixes start with drums. The "no drums" version has appeared on both commercial and promo 45s (only some copies), and it also has appeared on some copies of the vinyl LP. Here's a summary of the different mixes for this one: "no drums" intro - Appeared on some copies of the promo and commercial 45s and some copies of the vinyl LP. It has yet to make an appearance on a commercial CD, although TM Century did a nice vinyl transfer for one of their GoldDiscs. "drums" intro - Appeared on some copies of the promo and commercial 45s and some copies of the vinyl LP. This is the standard mix found on most CDs. Tony Mansfield 12" Mix - Some copies of the 12" call it the "American Remix." This version appears on the out-of-print CD single and Hardest Hits, Vol. 2 compilation, both on the Unidisc label. It runs (6:15). "Jellybean" 12" Mix - This mix appeared on promo 12" copies labeled "remixed version." This is the version on the Naked Eyes compilation Everything And More, although that CD incorrectly labels it as "Tony Mansfield 12" Mix." Run time is (5:42).

	If I were to remove the drums from the intro of "Always Something There to Remind Me" using my digital editing software, would I have the correct intro? Or is there a difference in the mix as well?

	The "no drums" intro has some additional bell sounds that aren't present on the common "drums" intro version. You can't recreate it by removing the drums from the "drums" intro version. The rest of the track is identical once the intro ends. I have an Australian 5-CD box set put out by EMI Australia in 1999 called "Eighties Complete", which is the only place I've seen the "no drums" intro on CD. I haven't listened closely enough to figure out if it's a transfer from vinyl, but it sounds mighty clean. (There's also an "Eighties Complete Vol. 2" - that's not it.) When I get home tonight, I can provide the catalog #.

	Good info! I didn't realize that version was available on an import. Todd, the "no drums" intro sounds almost like the standard version, except you'd have to remove the drums from the multi-track tape until the first verse starts. Essentially, the intro is just the bells and synthesizers with an added "thunder" sound effect, and then the beat kicks in when the first verse begins.
