The database shows the Top 40 hit "Escapism (Part 1)" by James Brown with a run time of 3:17 on the following CDs:
Hot Pants (Polydor 314517985) 70's Funk Classics (Polygram Special Markets 314520304) However, on the Make It Funky - The Big Payback 1971-1975 CD (Polydor 314533052), the song is shown with a run time of 4:02. There are presently no comments in the database accounting for the song's drastic run time differences on any of these CDs. Can anyone shed some light on which versions appear on these discs? Todd, my commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:14), but an actual time of (3:17), which exactly matches the times of the 2 CDs you cite above. Your point about the (4:02) version is well taken, and does appear to warrant some sort of additional notation.

As always, I appreciate the commerical 45 info, Jim!
I have one idea as to what might be the origin of the mysterious 4:02 version appearing on the Make It Funky - The Big Payback 1971-1975 CD (Polydor 314533052). According to www.allmusic.com, "Escape-ism" is broken up into two parts on James Brown's Hot Pants CD (Polydor 314517985) with printed run times as follows: Escap-ism, Pt. 1 (3:18) Escap-ism, Pt. 2 (4:10) I'm wondering if perhaps the 4:02 version on the Make It Funky disc is "Part 2" of the song? Pat, could you please make a comparison of "Part 2" on the Hot Pants CD and see if it matches up with the 4:02 version on the Make It Funky CD? |

Escap-ism Part II bears no resemblence to the 4:02 version. I have entered a "neither the 45 nor LP version" comment by the (4:02) entry.

As noted in the database, the James Brown Singles Volume 7: 1970-1972 CD set on Hip-O Select/Polydor B0012728 contains a remix of "Escape-ism (Part 1)" in addition to the original hit mix. Since this CD series is suppose to bring to light every James Brown single released during his King Records era, does this mean that some 45 pressings of "Escape-ism" contained the original hit mix, while other 45 pressings that contained the remix?
