I've never heard this song on 45 (or anywhere else, frankly), but I'm hearing two distinct recordings here, and I'm curious which is the hit version:

1 - The version on the "Class Reunion 1975" disc, which starts with a harmonica on the lead.

2 - The version that I have on the Mike Post "Television Theme Songs" EP. This replaces the harmonica with guitar.

Based on the feedback for this disc on iTunes, it sounds like #2 may be a re-recording, but I was hoping one of the gurus here could weigh in?

Mike Post re-recorded "The Rockford Files" for his 1982 Elektra LP Television Theme Songs. The 1975 hit version had been on MGM. In the UK the new recording of "The Rockford Files" was issued as the B-side of "Theme From Magnum P.I.", but I believe the US 45 had a different B-side.

Yes, the harmonica version is the 1975 hit version.

The U.S. 45 for "Theme From Magnum P.I." had a song called "Gumbus Red" as the B-side.

The Harmonica intro version is the original MGM 45 single
version. The Guitar introduction was the re-record for
Elektra Records in 1982. That Elektra EP is still very
worth owning and is one of the best sounding records I have
ever heard on a good rig.
I turn up the good and turn down the bad!

If my memory serves, I first became aware of that re-recorded version of "The Rockford Files" on a Polydor and/or Collectables re-issue 45 that included Johnny Bristol's "Hang On In There Baby" on the other side, FYI.
