I am slowly trying to make my own single edits of LP versions,
based on my own 45s, since there doesn't seem to be a huge run of re-issue CDs out lately with single versions on them. So far, I haven't done too badly, experimenting with Seger, the Little River Band, and using the very helpful editing tips sprinkled throughout other posts on this site. Now, I'm editing down Eagles LP versions down to their single edits. However, it sounds to me as though "One Of These Nights" was not only edited, but sped-up. I'm not 100% sure of my turntable speed, so could anybody out there confirm if the 45 version is sped- up? Thanks. |

Paul:
Actually, one of my next homemade 45 edits I will be replicating from CD is "One of These Nights". I've acquired an mp3 copy of the commercial 45 from Edtop40. I've always found his turntable to be pretty accurate so I believe his mp3 reflects the correct 45 speed. I ran a quick A/B comparison between the 45 and the LP version on CD via my Adobe Audition software and I've concluded that both versions play very close to the same speed. The 45 run time is 3:34 so if you're coming up with a significantly shorter run time when you clock your 45 copy, then your turntable is likely playing at a faster than normal speed. Not to hijack this thread, but is it possible to replicate the 45 version of the Eagles' "Best Of My Love" by a simple edit (or two or 10 or 20) of the LP version? And if so, how?

Haven't checked up on Best of My Love, but "One of These Nights" was the first homemade edit I ever did. I didn't notice the 45 running at a different speed. I edited mine from the DCC gold Gr. Hits.
Tip: one thing you'll want to notice is that the volume of the sound VERY SLIGHTLY increases at the edit point, because the point they jump to is after the fadeout already starts, so they needed to up the volume to match the pre-edit point, and they appear to have overcompensated. The edit point is right between "these" and "nights," right before, "And I wanna say, heeeeeey." |

As for "Best Of My Love," there is only one edit. At the end of the
bridge, at about the 3:06 mark, when Henley sings "I guess that wasn't enough, oh ooh woh but" the edit cuts out everything until the band is singing "Oh, sweet darlin'." Just go to the point where there are two sets of "Oh, sweet darlin's" before Henley sings "Every night and day." Then fade from 3:18 to 3:30 and cut off the rest. It'll sound like an abrupt cut, but that's the way it is on the 45. |

So it should sound like this:
. . .I guess it wasn't enough, oh, oh-whoa-hoh, but Ohhhhhhhhhh, sweet darling You get the best of my love Whoa-hoh-hoh-ohhhhhhh, sweet darling Every night and day You get the best of my love (Start fade at 3:18) Yes? Doug |

It's been reported in ICE that many of the Eagles CDs were issued with speed problems, and are supposedly corrected in the remastered versions. I don't know if that has anything to do with the speed difference noticed.

See I thought that the only splice in "...Nights" was eliminating the first 17 seconds on the 45-rpm disc. Where were the other edits?

And that single edit sticks out like a sore thumb and audible as heck.
