I was comparing the 45 version on The Very Best Of Otis Redding (Rhino, 1992; digitally identical to the Stax/Volt box from 1991) to the mono LP version on Time-Life's Legends Of Soul - Otis Redding (R616-03, 2001; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Atco's Classic Recordings from 1991), and I noticed that the 45 is an edit and an early fade of the LP version. (The 45 version also seems much faster, but I don't know how accurate that Atco CD is.)
For the 45, the edit occurs at 2:51, at the snare hit right before the word "tenderness". For the LP version, 32 beats are edited out, "tenderness" to "tenderness", from 2:54 to 3:12. The 45 also fades about 5 seconds earlier than the LP version. So, the designation should be "45 version" and "LP version"; the 1955-1996 edition of the book has "45 length" and "LP length". |

my commercial 45 issued as volt 141 states the run time on
the label as 3:20 but actually runs 3:26....the version on the cd 'very best of' as rhino 71147 runs only runs 3:17 and fades out 0:06 earlier than the actual vinyl 45 version.....the vinyl 45 is also sped up versus the cd version........i'm wondering if any of are resident editing pros have been able to edit the 3:46 lp version to match the vinyl 45 version....the run out groove info for me commercial 45 is 'VLT-11135-3' |

okay....it looks like the re-issue 45 issued on the volt
orange and brown label with the multi colored lettering runs 3:26 while the original 45 issued as the orange and black with the voltage icon on the top of the record runs 3:23....thanks for your input pat...the orange and brown has 'VLT-11135-3' etched while the original orange and black 45 has 'V-11135-2' |

paul was kind enough to extend the 45 version by using the
lp version fade to adjust to the proper length of the vinyl 45, which after further review is actually 3:21 and NOT 3:23....although my vinyl 45 has quite a bit of surface noise during the fade....can anyone else confirm their 45 run time of the red and black original issue 45? |

Yes, based on the commercial 45 dub Ed sent me of Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" , I do concur that his copy runs 3:21. Granted, the vinyl surface noise is very loud and it's possible some final traces of music audio at the end of the fade out are buried under the noise. However, I cranked up the volume and made what I believe is an accurate judgment of the end point at 3:21.
