OK, I'm confused. The 45 version of Yes' "And You And I" is split into two parts (there also seems to be a promo edit as well)--the LP version only runs (10:08) or thereabouts. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Part 2 was the hit side (this just missed the top 40 at BILLBOARD, peaking at #42), but I can't confirm this (I don't have the 45 and don't recall what if anything radio played). Anybody know for sure?

Doug, I only have a promo 45 for this one. It's labeled:
"And You And I (Part 1) Edited Version. Deadwax is ST-A-25432-4. Listed time is 3:25, actual is 3:28. |

I had seen one on E-Bay, John. Looked to be a UK issue. Both sides same time, one mono and one stereo. Does that match what you have?

And I suppose the other question whether the LP version can be edited to match the stereo side of the promo (probably can't match the mono side unless the mono side was a folddown).

Interesting. So I guess radio played the edited promo, and the commercial single was the full length Part 1 on one side and the full length Part 2 on the other.
And congrats on 1500. I'll get there one of these years. :) |

My stereo stock copy's listed times are (5:45) for Part I and (4:12) for Part II.
I heard neither the promo nor stock single on commercial radio at the time, but did play the DJ 45 in college. Happy 1500th, John. And the posts just keep on comin'! :) |

Checking my Whitburn 1955-1993 book, Part 2 was indeed the "hit" side.

I hadn't listened to my stock 45 since the '70s (guess I was a bit more of a Yes fan at the time than in the ensuing years) but when I did play it the other day, Part II didn't sound at all like what I'd remembered hearing back in the day. But Part I did.
Thanks to the DJ 45 "Part I" dub supplied by John, I discovered that the entire DJ 45 edit is found within Part I of the commercial 45. The promo sheds the long acoustic intro from the Part I stock 45, and fades out a minute or so earlier than the stock single. I couldn't detect any other edit, but did notice that the DJ 45 runs slower than the stock; I had to slow the stock copy down by almost 1% to keep the two in sync. Wondering how Part II could have been considered the hit when none of it had been serviced to top 40 radio via the DJ 45, I looked the song up in Whitburn's 1970s Hot 100 charts book and found the answer to the mystery: Over the course of the single's seven-week chart span, Billboard listed the title during its first three weeks as "And You And I". From weeks four through seven - which included its #42 peak - the title was listed as "And You And I (Part 1)". So the Pop Singles book was in error when it listed Part II as the hit side (as it also did in the 1955-2002 edition.). Doug, I can say that the DJ 45 can be replicated from Part I of the commercial 45, with an additional speed adjustment. I have a vinyl promo copy of Close To The Edge and will look into seeing if the DJ 45 can be replicated from the LP version, too. |

Just to confirm, the latest edition of Top Pop Singles (1955-2008) gets it right, listing Part I as the hit side.
