my commercial 45 for the paper lace song "the night chicago
died" issued as mercury 73492 states the run time on the label as 3:30 and does run that length.....the reason for the post....the vinyl 45 starts off with the sirens at the 0:04 mark of the song in the left channel while the version on the cd 'super hits of the 70's vol 13' has the sirens in the right channel.....question is...do any of the cd's in the db have the sirens in the correct channel?....thanks john for flipping the channels for me.... |

Do you mean that only the sirens are on the wrong channel, or are the left and right channels reversed for the whole song - on CDs?

Good question... If the left and right channels are reversed during the entire song, it's a very easy fix on any digital editing software program.

On the album (deadwax SRM-1-1008-A-CP4) the sirens are, in fact, on the left channel. The actual time is 3:28. On the 45 (deadwax 2-51294-CP-6) the same facts apply.
Two other CD's of note with reversed channels are Then Totally Oldies 1 with "Moonlight Feels Right". It has the 45 version with channels reversed. British Invasion GOLD two CD set has "Bus Stop" with reversed channels. |

Thanks to Ed and Tom, we know that the 45 and LP versions run 3:28 and 3:30, respectively, and that the siren-y keyboards at 0:04 should be in the left channel.
The song sounds great on Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 13 (1990), where it runs 3:29. Unfortunately, the siren-y keyboards at 0:04 are in the right channel, so the left and right channels are swapped. The following CDs use the same analog transfer as Have A Nice Day Vol. 13, and all also have their left and right channels swapped:
Manually swap the left and right channels on Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 13 (1990). |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Just for kicks, I finally had a moment to satisfy my
curiosity about a minor detail on this record. At the start of the 2nd chorus (1:50) I hear a splice there right after the words "a hundred cops are dead"...on the beat after that word it sounds like the you hear reverb tail from the word "law" (:50) at the end of the first verse. I wondered, did they just splice in another copy of the first chorus to make the finished product? Answer: Yes. The entire 2nd chorus is a copy of the entire first. Original material resumes at (2:24). Just some FYI trivia. MM Edited by MMathews |
