I searched, but was surprised I could not find a thread
for this song. This song was edited for airplay. Does
anyone know how to re-create this from the album
version?

The promo CD Single has an "Edit/Remix" and an "AC Edit", so it's possible that one or both may not be just simple edits of the LP Version.

Whenever I heard it edited on the airwaves, they
usually cut every pre-chorus ("I'm learning to live
without you now...) and went straight into the chorus
after the verses ("I've been trying to get down to the
heart of the matter..."). I can't recall if they cut
the bridge out as well but it's possible? It certainly
didn't last as long as the album cut.

This always kind of bummed me out because the pre-
chorus happened to be my favorite bit of the song and I
felt that it definitely added to the dramatic build-up
to the chorus but in terms of radio-friendliness,
they probably thought the song needed to cut to the
chase sooner.

India Arie recorded a cover of "The Heart of The
Matter" that clocked in at nearly 8 minutes and the
radio edit actually mirrored the Don Henley radio edit
almost exactly (pre-chorus removed, etc.).

The remix/edit added a snare drum to give the song more "punch" for Top 40 radio. I'm not sure if the AC edit on the promo CD matches the
TM Century AC edit, maybe it does, but the TM Century AC edit made the same edits that the remix/edit had, only without the added snare
drum, as the album mix was sourced. Oh wait! I see the other string now that somebody pushed up.. well anyway, I'll leave this here..

Thanks all for both posts! (Don't know why I could not
retrieve the original post when I searched for it.)

Bill,

So the AC Edit is the one radio played? Or is it the edit/remix? The edit/remix sounds more like the one I heard on the radio...
Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

I couldn't agree more.

'Round these parts, they started off playing the longer version then switched to the edited pre-chorus. At first, I thought I was going senile because
nobody else I knew had noticed the edits. Nowadays, it sure is easier to find this info using the interwebs machine.

Taking out an important piece of a song for the single edit, like "The Heart of the Matter", this reminds me of the 1973 single edit of Aerosmith's "Dream On." In that mix (which was all I heard on Boston radio in 1973), it edited out the pre-chorus:

Yeah, I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
You got to lose to know how to win

I guess Colubmia tried to take a song that didn't adhere to the normal song formula, and change it to verse-chorous-verse-chorus-bridge chorus.
