So while I'm perusing iTunes looking at the song--Pat's database indicates that the LP version is available on the Firefall CD (where it
runs (3:50)). Yet, the iTunes version of said CD has a (3:36) listed time for the song (which is one second longer than the run time of my 45
version file). Which means the time listed on the iTunes file is wrong, or they used the 45 version (which isn't the first time iTunes has
done this). Yeah, it's a $1.29 investment, but I'd rather it be right if I'm gonna plunk it down. :)

Anyone know what the difference between the two versions is, to see if there's something in the audio sample I possibly could listen for?

Doug, the intro is shorter on the 45 version (the edit comes six seconds in.)

45 intro runs :28
LP intro runs :37

The final, sustained note is also faded sooner on the 45 version by about eight seconds on the Rhino Greatest Hits CD.

There is also a difference in the lyrics...the album
version says "G-d damn girl" where it was changed to "you
damn girl" on the single.
(I'm referring to the original vinyl album here, don't have
the song on CD)

Pat says that was only on the promo--stock copies were uncensored.

To Hykker:

This is going by memory since I don't own a 45, but I own the original LP:

The 45 is an edit & a different mix (instrument placement within the stereo spectrum).

The censored version has just "...damn girl" no "God" or "You" by my hazy memory from radio airplay.

At least some commercial singles had the "God" in it.

My question to the gallery is were there two different promos, was the mono side of the promo the only censored version, or what?

This is stuff we need to know...

Thanks!

Andy

I have DJ 45s from both the Specialty plant (stereo/mono matrix numbers ST-A-33227-1 and A-33227-1, respectively) and PRC (matrix numbers ST-A-33227-2-1-1 and A-33227-2-1-1).

All four sides have the "I said you [guitar strum] damn girl" edit.

There's something else that sticks out about this same part of the song. The vocals are split between the left and right channels on the LP version, but are mixed right down the center on the stereo 45 (at least they are on the DJ 45; I don't have the stock 45 to compare.)

The vocals are also centered on the 45 version from the Greatest Hits CD, with one notable exception: the word "god" is lifted from the LP mix, because the centered vocals shift to split-channel stereo on the word "god" and then right back to the center for the remainder of the song.

Is this how it sounds on the uncensored stock 45?

Where does the "you" in the uncensored part? It's not in
the uncensored 45 version.

At least some stock copies were censored...I have one of
them. It's a Monarch pressing, deadwax info: ST-A-33227-3
also (delta)101812. The edit is a John described, you
(strum) damn girl. Vocals are centered.

John, neither the word "you" nor the guitar strum are present on the uncensored version. Here's how the line is sung on the censored version:

"I-I-I-I saidyou [strum] damn..." (There's no space between "said" and "you.")
