According to the database, the lone CD appearance of Gabrielle's "Dreams" is incorrectly listed as appearing on an album titled Gabrielle. I have this song on her 1993 parent album/CD which is called Find Your Way. The database does correctly list the label and catalog number as Go! Discs/London 828443.

Isn't "Dreams" also on the Magnolia soundtrack?

Whoa, "Magnolia" one of my favorite films of all time, but
anyone who hasn't seen will not understand the previous post. Regarding "Dreams" ... did any other market play the faster, uptempo club mix? Z-100 played what was apparently a radio edit of the 12" single. Was wondering if that edit was on a promo. MM |

No kidding, I found that out the hard way. The red text above is a direct quote from the Oscar-nominated movie "Magnolia"; those words are uttered by Tom Cruise's character (he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination), and it's the MOST memorable scene on the movie, and it's possibly the most-quoted line from the movie. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommended it. Since we are all adults, I didn't think it would be an issue. It's an Oscar-nominated movie, not some smut. :) It's not really cursing, they are just body parts. Ha ha ha. Anyhoo, back to the topic. Yes, the edit of The Developed Arrested Mix was played by quite a few stations. I was living in Miami back then and if I remember correctly, although I'm not 100% sure, Power 96 in Miami was the first station to spin the edit of The Developed Arrested Mix. It spread like wildfire from there. I believe airplay of the house mix eventually surpassed airplay of the 7" Version. The weird part is that it seems that Go! Discs did not want to position Gabrielle as a dance diva? All of the mixes available, only The Development Corporation (The Developed Arrested Mix and The Red Underground Mix) mixes were true house mixes. The were also mixes by Rob D. & Rollo (sort of dance mixes, but not proper four on the floor mixes); the rest of the mixes were downtempo (MESS!). Go! Discs U.S. did not even bother to commission new U.S. mixes. Go! Discs issued a commercial cassette single and a commercial CD Maxi single, and for whatever reason, they left off (on purpose?) all mixes by The Development Corporation. In fact their two mixes can only be found on the promo and commercial vinyl maxi single. The promo CD also leaves out their 2 mixes. This is really perplexing because by the time "Dreams" was issued in America, the single had already been a No. 1 hit (for weeks) in the U.K., and furthermore, the single destroyed dancefloors across the U.K. (it also hit No. 1 on the U.K. Club chart) and Europe. The Developed Arrested Mix was the mix that received most, if not all, of the club play. It also hit No. 1 on Billboard's Club Play chart. Once airplay of the house mix took over, Go! Discs quickly re-issued the cassette single... as a "double" cassette single. Both cassettes came housed in a "fat" cassette cardboard sleeve. The first cassette was just like the original pressing, while the second cassette included The Developed Arrested Mix on the A-side and The Red Underground Mix on the B- side. Printed on the front cover: Includes free bonus cassette featuring #1 house mixes. It wasn't until 1996 that The Developed Arrested Mix was released in the U.S. on CD format, as the B-side to "Give Me A Little More Time". I have two different edits that were released on two different U.K. compilations. Both are labeled as The Developed Arrested Mix. One is 4:40 long, which I dubbed The Developed Arrested Mixshow. The other one is 3:37 long, which I dubbed The Developed Arrested Radio Mix. I have both if anyone wants them. I consider them official mixes as they were released on official compilations. As far as I know, there was no promo CD from Go! Discs with The Developed Arrested Edit. Maybe someone who worked radio in 1993 knows for sure. http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-All-Time-Greatest-Hits-Of -Dance-2/release/734369 http://www.discogs.com/Various-Its-The-Ultimate-Dance-Album/ release/408682 Mark, Phats & Small issued a white label of "Respect The Cock", which sampled Tom's line. But when it came to release it commercially, Tom Cruise would not permission. Someone by the name of Jordan Newhouse eventually re-recorded Tom's lines for the commercial release. http://www.discogs.com/A-Small-Phat-One-Respect-The-Cock/rel ease/114160 Edited by Loveland |

Hello all - in Atlanta, I believe the Arrested Development Mix was the one that received airplay. I remember it well from '93. I really got into Gabrielle in 2000 after "Rise" hit #1 in the UK (man, what an awesome record - how that missed in the US is a mystery and a crime). I heard the original mix of "Dreams" around that time and was surprised because up to that point, I only knew of the Arrested Development Mix.

Loveland,
i sent you PM about Gabrielle. and yes, i have a feeling i was hearing the Development Arrested mix as well. I don't have either anymore, but i remember buying the CD Maxi single, and being disappointed, as the slower LP version was not what i was hearing - so i then bought the vinyl 12" single and that did have the faster house style mix i knew. But in the Magnolia movie, it was indeed the LP version that William H Macy ('Quiz Kid Donnie Smith') constantly played in his car. For those who missed this film, if you don't see it for the award winning songs by Aimee Mann, or Tom Cruise's only Oscar worthy performance, see it for the only film you'll ever see with a genuine storm of raining frogs. :-) MM |

I LOVE the movie. And yes, Tom was robbed of an Oscar. He was amazing on the movie. Technically speaking, the version included on the soundtrack is the "7" Version". Did you guys know that this is song is even older? It was first released in 1991, on the U.K. indie Victim Records. The original version samples Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. Upon it's 12" release, the song became massive on the clubs. It's not a house song, instead the song has more of a Soul II Soul vibe. The original 12" sold like hotcakes, supply for the record couldn't keep up with the demand. A second vinyl maxi single was issued in 1992, with 3 additional mixes (none of them house mixes). After a lengthy battle, Go! Beat / Go! Discs "won" the battle to release the song without the sample, as Tracy Chapman refused to give clearance. Boooooo to her! Of course this was her loss as the single sold millions around the world. Well, after months of legal battling Go! Beat finally get the all-clear to unleash Gabrielle's Dreams. "Dreams" began its eventful career as a much sought after and very hard to find white label. The inevitable happened as demand slowly but surely began to outweigh supply! As a result "Dreams" gradually amassed unprecedented underground acclaim. If were to stick our necks out, we'd say that "Dreams" in its original form was probably one of the most important underground hits of the last 18 months! "Dreams is now signed to Go! Beat. Re-recorded with producer Richie Fermie (Monie Love, Jungle Brothers), mixed by Rollo of Our Tribe and Johnny Jay of Family Foundation, it is a package to be reckoned with. "Dreams" is just the beginning for Gabrielle with further singles under way and an album already planned. The U.K. CD Maxi of "Rise" includes "Dreams" as track 3. It's labeled as the "Original Mix". It isn't. So don't waste your money. Here's the real original mix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLagXFf-bX4#! This is The Developed Arrested Mix (an edit of this mix is what was played by radio stations): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdBq5LXMuXY The Red Underground Mix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9Ug_GJPbMA Of the two Development Corporation mixes, The Developed Arrested Mix is the vocal mix, while The Red Underground Mix is the dub mix. Loveland, I had forgotten all about "Fast Car" being the original sample in "Dreams"! Thanks so much for the YouTube link. It really works well.

Was there an official edit of the "Arrested Developed" mix?
I've only seen the full 6:25 version. I would LOVE a shorter version of the edit. |
