timings in the database range from 2:39 (the mono mix, which I assume to be the 45 mix) to 2:46 for some stereo versions. How long was the 45 and was the stereo LP longer, or are the longer versions on CD more recent?

I believe the song was first released in stereo in the 1970's on a Warner Brothers 45 and that if there was actually a stereo LP, it was rechanneled. I don't see it listed on a stereo LP in the BSN discography for Laurie records....

Live in stereo.

This 1976 Laurie set (listed at BSN) was probably the first stereo appearance of The Wanderer:
LES-4002 - Everything You Always Wanted to Hear by Dion and the Belmonts But Couldn't Get - Dion And The Belmonts [1976] Runaround Sue - Dion (E)/The Wanderer - Dion (S)/The Majestic - Dion (S)/Love Came To Me - Dion (E)/Little Diane - Dion (E)/Lonely World - Dion (E)/Lovers Who Wander - Dion (E)/(I Was) Born To Cry - Dion (E)/I Got The Blues - Dion (E)/I Wonder Why - Dion & Belmonts (E)//A Teenager In Love - Dion & Belmonts (S)/Where Or When - Dion & Belmonts (E)/Runaway Girl - Dion (E)/Lonely Teenager - Dion (E)/When You Wish Upon A Star - Dion & Belmonts (S)/Teen Angel - Dion & Belmonts (E)/A Lover's Prayer - Dion & Belmonts (E)/That's My Desire - Dion & Belmonts (E)/Sandy - Dion (E)/No One Knows - Dion & Belmonts (E). The Warner Brothers 45 came out in 1979 in conjunction with the movie The Wanderers. That stereo mix was different, very dry, and literally had the life sucked out of it. GM Edit note: I've corrected the movie title. Edited by Gary Mack |

thanks Gary!
You know, I've often thought of being able to note when stereo mixes were done and/or first released of original 1960s mono singles. Many appeared simultaneously (either in the same year or close to when the 45 was out), or on a "greatest hits" LP soon after, but there are many that appeared years later. Would be quite the project to gather this info, although with the database and the knowledge of what appeared on LPs of the time, it could be done! Edited by davidclark |

Is there a difference between the mono and stereo version?

the mix is quite different (at least, the mono one I have from "The Essential Dion"), and of course as I stated, the length.

I couldn't agree more. When I got the Laurie Limited Edition Series LP in 1976, I almost thought I was listening to a different recording. It just sat there. The album itself was a disappointment, what with all of the fake stereo, and the ten-songs-to-a-side format landed it at the K-Tel notch on the loudness scale. "The Wanderer" clocked in at (2:40) in its stereo premiere, with a very abruptly truncated fade. There is no stated time on either the label or the bare-bones jacket. Edited by Yah Shure |

Any more thought about doing this. Granted I would be lost from the get go, but would find such a source invaluable (behind Pat's of course). |

What would be even cooler would be to make the list the "Lost Stereo Mixes" (meaning the first stereo appearance would have to be at least a decade after the song's initial release - just a definition I'm throwing out there for the heck of it.)
And,of course, no reprocessed "fake" stereo stuff. Sorry. I guess I got away from the original topic . . . |

The Mono 45 version of this track still has the mojo. 2:39
playing time on my Laurie Double Gold 45 single. My wife's UK London original is also 2:39. Fade on the Stereo is different. |
