Okay, can someone give me a primer on how to make the 45 version of We are the World from the LP version? I don't want to plunk down the money for the Quincy Jones boxed set.

Easy... Just fade the LP version from (6:11) to (6:23).

I noticed the database says "version" but I've never noticed any edits anywhere in the 45. Can anyone point out one that I missed?

I agree that you can fade the LP version to end at 6:22 and arrive at the 45 version. The reason I do not use the terminology "length" to distinguish these cd appearances is due to the extra lyrical content found on the LP version beyond the 6:22 mark.

What's the extra content? Doesn't the chorus just repeat a few more times? Also, wouldn't that go against your definition of "length" since there are no other differences in the song?

Pat, if the differences occur beyond the 6:22 mark (once the single has ended), then by your own definition, shouldn't the term "length" be used here?

I only have the (6:22) version from the Rhino Quincy Jones box set, but even with the extension of the song being a rehash of the choruses aren't there different solo vocalists that change from chorus to chorus beyond the song's single length? If so, from that standpoint I can see the 45 version/LP version designation (because it's not really a matter of the choruses just continuing on for 40 more seconds before the LP fade).

In just about every other instance where the term "version" is used, it designates a difference in the mix, edits within the song, or something other than fading early. As a reader, when I see the word "length" I automatically know that there's just a difference in length between the two and nothing more, which is the case with "We Are The World."

Even if there are different solo vocalists (or other elements) after the song has faded out on the 45, in my opinion, it still wouldn't make this a "version". Also, by calling it "length", people with the "We Are the World" CD can know that they can create their own "single" simply by fading their CD recording early.
